Yes, it is a place I would recommend everyone visit at least once. Very interesting, a lot of variety, very crowded most of the time, and many sodas (Tico restaurants), several of which offer very good "comida typical de Costa Rica". But: "Best local eats"? not likely!! Yes, the food is good but far from being the best. In fact, almost every soda (there are 100s) in downtown San Jose is equally good or better. "Best prices"?? As far as "sodas" go in Costa Rica the ones in the market are among the most expensive- almost double the price of many equally good sodas!! Again, I am not saying one should not go there nor eat there! Just trying to correct the statement "Best local eats at the best prices". For the first or second time visitor they may seem great (and again I do recommend you try them (once). Actually the Soda "San Cristabal " is very good, especially their fruit drinks "con leche". It is actually 4 separate sodas in a cluster. If you enter off of Ave Central at the small entrance about midway between C6 and C8 and turn left at the first left you will walk right into them in about 50 feet. |

^^What he said. The price of a typical meal (casado) is around 3500ยข if I remember, it's around 2,000 (or less) in most other places. |

The produce market on Calle 6, between Ave 2 and Ave.4, has a soda in the back corner that has a good casado for 1,000. But they're done serving at about 3 pm. |

Soda Lima on calle 2 near Pension Monica. Some of the better fish I've had in S J. Very reasonable prices. Agree about the produce market on C6. Also go to c8 and try walking from ave 3 to ave 4 (several blocks). Interesting and inexpensive food and drink out there, including freshly roasted coffee. |

Higher yes! Double, no! But the advantages are ppl watching and food variety. Those are worth something. First, I said "ALMOST" double the price of "MANY" equally good sodas. Second, many sodas in downtown are open to the street and offer similar people watching, some even better (IMHO). Third, food variety???? Are we talking about the same "Central Market"? Every soda there has almost exactly the same menu (Muy Tico Menu). In fact most of the food is actually cooked in kitchens overhead on the second floor and I know for a fact there is a LOT of sharing of items. In fact 7 of the sodas use the SAME kitchen. Using one of my favorite sodas as an example and comparing it to San Cristabal and a couple of the other more popular sodas in Mercado Central: ABC soda-- also on Central but between C9 and C11 (1 1/2 blocks from the REY) a casada is c2900 including a drink (natural or tea) and is more food than I can eat. In the sodas in the Market it is c3500- c3900 plus the drink (c1500-c1800). And ABC is higher than many of the sodas downtown. Again, I am not saying guys should not go to, nor try, the sodas in the Mercado Central. I was just trying to correct what I saw (IMHO) as an incorrect statement by the OP. |

Everyone should visit Mercado Central once for lunch. It is worthwhile. Don't buy tourist shyt there, it is muy caro. Go to the tourist Bazaar on Avenida Central y Calle 13, at the base of Museo Nacional. |
