Restaurant Review La Cascada’s Escazu Costa Rica: 228-0906
All Major Credit Cards accepted. Dress Casual. Pricing Average.

Hope Everyone has a Happy New Year but I thought I’d relate a dinner I had last evening in a place that I found to be not only tremendous value for the money but great service and a real nice experience overall.

Had the pleasure of dining with G-Man and his lovely lady, my bitch wife and another friend of his and his pregnant wife who at 7 months pregnant is still more pleasant to be around then the witch next to me. The other couple who are Tico & Tica respectively suggested a local steak house just as you enter into Escazu called La Cascada.

From what I am to understand this place has been around a long time and the décor and the layout inside and out reflect it. It’s quite old, but clean and causal for a steak house environment. We are greeted by a based on the décor an over dressed staff in black Tuxedos and even though the place has no ambiance, its service was such of a 5 star restaurant anywhere.

We settled in and were presented with a large wine list with exceptional values on there. So much so that I had to ask if a certain bottle was indeed that price 3 times as it was 25% less than what we can buy it for in a super market in the states. He said yes so we ordered up a couple of bottles along with a few cocktails to get the party started. The menu was so dam big it took us quite some time to get through it. It is in both English and Spanish and has every time of Steak, cut, and variety that any one chef can think up. With this much variety you are sure to make a few things good, some not so good and some great so we relied on our Tico/Tica couple to make some recommendations.

We started with a ceviche which was as fresh as I have had in this country with no water. Just chunks of fresh fish with lime juice. (I will never understand any lemons in this country.) The wife had the soup of the day which was a beef consommé excellent. Other types of salads went around with a mixed salad with avocado’ hearts of palm being the best of the lot. The Caesar was passable but other things were more worth wild.

6 Entrees were followed and I’ll take them piece by piece. The Tico ordered stuffed Tenderloin with shrimp. I thought when he ordered it, it would not go over well, and I was correct. By far the worst meal on the table. His wife had fresh sea bass grilled. Only fish ordered and dam was it fresh & tasty. G-man had a Filet mignon covered with mushroom sauce and wrapped in bacon. The meat was so good they almost overpowered how tasty it was with the good but to much mushroom sauce. His lady had a Skewer of chunks of tenderloin with Large not your everyday Costa Rican shrimp. It was grilled with onions and peppers and was quite the dish. My Wife had a T-Bone that was fantastic but of course she left ½ of it on the plate. (BITCH)….. I had a sizzling plate of variety of meat cuts with vegetables peppers & Onions. Quite honestly it was fantastic.

All the entrees were server with black beans, plantains & choice of baked potatoes, or mashed garlic potatoes. The desert tray looked great but no dice here after 3 bottles of wine, some coffee, the ever present after dinner drink that kicked up the before dinner drinks.

Bill was about $150.00 which for what we ate and drank was more than reasonable. Food prices are quite inexpensive but as usual we run up the liquor tab and don’t forget that 23% service & tax charge.

All and all I’m sure many of you have eaten here but have not reviewed it’s a great spot not to far from the gulch, not formal with great food, and great prices and great service.

ENJOY THIS ONE IT IS A DO NOT MISS!

Hey CRT Gourmet,
One of my favorite places, close to La Parilla but I think so much better. But as said in an earlier post have only tried La parilla once and based on JB & VB reports will give it a second try. But hard to beat La Casada's

CRT Gourmet,

I do enjoy your detailed reports of Dining Hotspots in the City. As I’ve stated in an earlier post <looks like we lost a post or two in December> I do like to venture out of the Gulch and Sample New Restaurants or Local Favorites that may not be that well known to the Masses. I hope that on my next trip I will be able to meet up with you and your significant other for a nice evening on the Town…. And I promise that I will eat everything on my plate, as I wouldn’t want to be labeled a “bastard” <just kidding my friend>. :P

Next time you see Gman ask him how he likes his Pizza… Reading his latest Trip Report it looks like he’s becoming a big fan of Pizza Hut or was it Papa Johns? Knowing "The G" he will have them serving up a Bottle of his favorite Vino with that Take Out Pie…

Great Reporting, and I am wishing you a Year filled with Good Eats….

Bon Appetit

JB
