Hey,

I am curious if the steakhouses serve horse in San Jose as I want to try it but will not pay black market prices in the US to try.

Try Ikea; apparently the meatballs have horse meat in them.

I tried horse meat from a butcher here in Canada. Tastes like deer meat.

Jesus Christ, MP....you are really going out of your way lately, aren't you, what with your son's trip to HLH, and now looking to eat horse meat    - while I was not 100% aboard on the HLH trip, I posted it was your family and your business. What's next.....where can you find dog on the menu :?:  :(

Yeah, I know, in Korea they eat dogs, and France and Belgium, horse meat is consumed regularly, but as a horse owner and an American where the practice is discouraged, not to mention not part of our mainstream diet, I find your desire and question highly offensive - in South Fl, where I live, we have a problem with horse slaughter - companion animals have been stolen and killed, many in horrific ways, some slaughtered while still alive (google it if you don't believe me, and please - don't compare it to the slaughter of cows, i.e. "You eat steak, don't you?").

That said, its not available in any of the steak houses I've been to in Costa Rica.

One other thing too.....if you buy it on the black market - and that's the only place as because there are laws prohibiting its retail sale as well as the fact that that there are no legal slaughterhouses in the USA that kill horses - you are buying it from illegal hispanic assholes (highly likely as 100% of the felons convicted thus far have been latin) and the meat is filled with chemicals that are given to companion animals - like dewormer, etc vs horses rased for slaughter. Either way the practice disgusts me.

Oh and PS - spare me the flames because I'm not gonna change my mind; I find the practice of consuming horse disgusting

You must live in Davie! I agree by working in south Florida about the horse meat problem. I respect your belief about horse stew btw. Just on holiday like to try new foods.

No, a litttle farther south, in Coconut Grove :)

I hear you re "new foods" but I'd settle for a decent <cow> steak or Chinese food in Costa Rica

(And not to put too fine a point on it, but the problems we have had with the illegal horse slaughter in S. FL are beyond belief - still, thank you for the very civil reply :) )

That is a bit over the top. Just because you happen to own a companion horse and would personally not consume horse meat does not mean that people who do consume horse meat, or are curious and would like to sample it, are despicable people who should not be allowed to ask a legitimate question.

People have the right to their own believes and tastes and unless they infringe on the rights or safety of another they should be allowed to practice those rights and tastes.

Why do posters here feel that anyone disagreeing with them are "flaming them". A forum by nature is about back and forth dialog and as long as things are not personal or derogatory the are not flames.

Sorry, ID - for the reasons given I find the practice offensive - same as I would if someone asked about eating dog, and justified it by saying that many in China and Korea (and probably other places in Asia do so and its part of their culture. They eat whale and dolphin in Japan, and I think thats wrong too - I've given up on political correctness and could care less about respecting someones belief(s) that I find abhorrent - yes, I feel that strongly about the subject at hand.

2 other points:

The Op and I had a respectful exchange, as is noted by his response to my post and my reply to his

My response to "flames" was looking to head off those who might do so at the pass, so to speak - in this case, no one is going to alter or change my feelings and frankly, I did not want to hear a bunch of "Well, you eat steak, right" You know exactly what I'm referring to

The despicable people you reference are those in South Fl, areas of Miami to be precise, who steal companion animals, and cruelly butcher them - in at least one case, while still alive - again, documented cases - not talking about being kidnapped by aliens here, ID - but facts

I don't find, in this case, the OP despicable - in fact, he sounds like a good guy, if a tad misguided in a few areas   - but like my fundamentalist christian friends say, in this regard, I hate the sin but not the sinner.

I am well aware of the recent rash of slaughtering horses, both companion and no longer economical thoroughbred race horses, that is occurring primarily in northwest Dade and Hialeah. Clearly there can be no justification for the practice. However the reality of it is as long as there is a demand for the product and laws exist that do not allow the operation of humane slaughter houses the practice will continue.

I do not condone it and think it is reprehensible but that does nothing to change the fact that where there is an economic opportunity people will take it without much thought to the legal or moral implications.

All that being said while it is not my desire to sample horse flesh I do not look at those who do have the desire as anything other then normal people who have a different outlook on what foods they wish to try. I like snails not everyone does. I hope those who do not are not horrified at my choice of food.

Heck, I even accept that some people smoke cigars. :P
