Hello Forum,

Please give me your advise on authentic Costa Rican restaurants in San Jose.

I don't mean típico, I mean an authentic Tico experience, for example Soda Chelles downtown.

cheers,

There is a Colombian restaurant around the corner from Soda Peru that is very good. Just do not go on Saturdays before noon when I am there and order the tamales. The tamales are some of the best I have ever had and they are huge, wrapped in banana leaves, pork and chicken in one. I have been craving them since my last trip.

That's what Tipico is supposed to be... authentic CR food.

"Las Banderas"
I eat there almost daily when I'm in town, but have never tried the tamales. They have a great plato del dia and I never seem to get past that. Although it is a Colombian restaurant, I can't tell the difference between that and any typical tico plato. The owners are not great on personality, but they do cook good food. I once coaxed a smile out of the lady there, but that's it.

Definitely a matter of opinion as are most restaurant recommendations.

I would describe it as an over priced mediocre food place that is a tourist trap. Just go by around noon and witness the endless parade of tourist buses parked outside.
