So, I'll be staying at DR for a 4 day weekend I'm giving myself in November. Where is the best place for an American style (or close to it) breakfast nearby? Preferably a buffet.

I understand the restaurant attached to Del Rey has one, are there better options nearby? :?:

Thanks!

desayuno americano at the Sportsman's is VERY good IMO. Also the breakfast at HLH is pretty good and is free if you go with a girl in the morning "leggs and eggs" if it's still going on.

La Criollita is my favorite breakfast spot in San Jose... definitely head and shoulders above the rest, and very reasonable, too. You'll find La Criollita about a block west of the INS building on Av 7 between Cl 7 & 9.
Here is a recent review from Fodors:

La Criollita Review

Kick off your day with breakfast at this emerald green restaurant. Mornings are the perfect time to snag one of the precious tables in the back garden, an unexpected refuge from noise and traffic. Breakfast platters come with eggs on the side: the americano has pancakes and toast; the tico comes with bread, fried bananas, and natilla (sour cream); and the huge criollita has ham or pork chops. Government workers from nearby offices start arriving late in the morning, and the lunchtime decibel level increases appreciably. (This is the one time of day we recommend avoiding the place.) Everyone filters out about 2 pm, and once again, you have a quiet place for coffee and dessert.

La Criollita is very good as well. El Silencioso showed me that place in July. We sat in the back garden area where that birds are at. Reasonably priced if I remember correct.

It's actually attached to the Key Largo across the street. It's called the Del Mar.
That's the only buffet I know of anywhere in the neighborhood. Costs about $10usd
Get a table on the patio in back & dine alfresco, overlooking Parque Morazan.

Agree with comments regarding Del Ray/Key Largo. Best breakfast buffet since El Presidente, American breakfast items and tico items, great mix of food and eggs to order.

Confirmed. I've been going to the Del Mar for breakfast for at least the last 3-4 years every day while I'm in SJ. Not only has the price gone up, they now have some phuck head serving it for you, ie you can't help yourself as it used to be in the past. When I asked for some more bacon, the phucker had the nerve to say "Es mala por la corazon". I'm in very good shape & told him to just give me what I asked for. He wasn't happy. Told the waitress who I've seen before what he said & she was shocked. Told her I wouldn't be back. The older lady with a nice smile & dark hair who used to do the eggs is gone.

I love staying at La Amistad, but their breakfast sucks cojones.

How do fellers get that worn out old thing up with all the fat and grease in your breakfasts?

After a couple days at SL I usually end up walking to LA breakfast for a change of pace and consider it pretty good, but it can be hit or miss. Last time there was a dead bug in my fruit but I've learned to expect that anyplace in CR

Not a fan of being charged for bacon, especially after staying there 4-5x per year for the past 6 yrs. May have to give the Sportsmen's breakfast a try next time.

El O-Dunn Inn has a decent breakfast as well.

So as a hotel guest you get free eggs to order, free toast, free coffee, free side of fruit, French toast or pancakes, and yet you're unhappy they charge you 2 bucks for about 6 bacon strips?

Tough crowd.
