I think I posted this a couple of years back, but did a search and couldn't find anything. Does anyone have recommendations on a store for good wine in the SJ area? I want to say I wandered into one in San Pedro but that was at least 7-8 years ago and can't remember where it was. Is it like everything else in CR? They are so anal they are gonna miss a free buck that they tax the hell out of good wine? Don't get me wrong, I very much enjoy the wines of Chile but was wondering about some place with variety. I am not one of those pretentious wine people, believe me. I am lazy and don't like learning every little detail about things wine. I have been lucky enough at times to be around knowledgeable people who always had good recommendations. Have some possible wine tastings and events coming up, so thought this would be a good source. There are some very knowledgeable food people here.

The best wines in Costa Rica come in cardboard cartons, like milk.

There are a few wine shops I know of. The one in San Pedro is in the small shopping center "Cento Comercial Calle Real" where the restaurant Ichiban is located. It is on the other side of the street very close to Scotia Bank. In Escazu there is one in plaza "Los Laurelas" which is located almost directly across the street from the U.S. Ambassor's residence. There is another in Escazu in the stores in the white high rise condos (sorry forget the name) located almost directly across the street from Chichics. Although not a wine shop Super Sarettos in Escazu has a a large wine selection including some pricy ones.

I think there is still one right across from Don Fernando's butcher shop in Curridabat/Tres Rios. Just past la galera. I used to buy there when I would go pick up some steaks from Donny F's.

Thanks for the help guys! ID, I think that is the one I was talking about in Cento Comercial Calle Real. I remember it having a good selection. Might check that one and the one Doc mentioned across from Don Fernando at the same time to kill two birds.

I used to go to the one in Calle Real too. It has a pretty decent selection. I am partial to Tuscan wines, but I do love a good Chilean as well. I used to get my hair cut there buy wine and take sushi home when I lived in Barrio Escalante.

I drink Chardoneys and Sauvinghen blancs from Chile. (Laso is particularly good and cheap) The Auto Mercados have a nice selection.

Yeah, I have definitely enjoyed the wines from Chile over the years here and Auto Mercado does have a nice selection. Just thought I might treat myself a bit as I'm not drinking these days which saves me a good bit. Just something special from time to time would be nice.

Saretto's in Escazu is pretty good for it's wine selection. Also, near (50m east) the U.S. Ambassador's residence in Escazu is Laureles Plaza. Near the street is a Fischel pharmacy and a Spoon's on the other side of the plaza entrance. Past Spoon's towards the rear of Laureles Plaza is a wine store with excellent wines. A recommendation on a Chardonnay: The Haras 2009 from the Maipo Valley, Chile.
