I usually partake of breakfast while down in CR. I have seen the Presidente buffet(not impressed), like the DR buffet, but kinda expensive (especially when I have two Baileys with my coffee). Anyone have any other suggestions close to gulch, where you can get a decent norte americano breakfast (don't like rice & beans) with a liquor license? |

Diablo.... First off.. the restaurant / outdoor cafe at the Amon Plaza has a real nice buffet. Don't know how much it was as I stayed there last night and it was included, but it had the standard egg lady, potatoes, rice & beans, fresh fruit, pancakes, breads along with cheese, and some cold cut meats as well. Coffee was good, juice machine and a full bar... I am going to do a full review on the hotel and restaurant sometime tomorow when I get a chance, but I was quite impressed. There is also a small Tico Restaruant if you make a right out of the Presidente, and head towards Mas x Menos mercado some side of the street, its a small place, clean with a real decent breakfast. Steak and Eggs at the Colonial Casino Restaurant is also a winner and probably the best value in town. I might also add for whatever reason, the breakfast ordered from the kitchen at the Prez is much better than the buffet. My favorite is he pancakes and smoked pork chops.. A must do. Enjoy. |

Grand Hotel next to the National Theater is a must do at least once. Any weekday you can marvel at the chicas in their belly shirts. They have a cool latin style breakfast stew with fried eggs at the bottom. |

YO Breakfast belchers: Ain't no GRITS in CR. No good crispy bacon. No real cold milk unless you slept with a goat with chills during the night. No good drop. flake crispy bisquits and gravy. CR is not my place for breakfast and I'm tired of running the bread through that delapidated roller toaster at the Presidente to have it either taken by someone else or toasted on one side. I can only do so much of the beans, rice and fruit thing along with fishing my butter out of a watery grave dish. Oh! And there is the somewhat bitter tasting OJ during the rainy season.......not good with my vodka. NO GRITS.........All one needs to say. Did I mention no cold milk................ |

Circus- Don't know how often you get over to Jaco area, but Steve & Lisa's has got excellent thick, meaty, crispy bacon--as good as I have had anywhere. They also have a great huevos rancheros. The little Sunrise Cafe in downtown Jaco also has decent bacon most of the time as well as an americano breakfast that beats the hell out of rice & beans & fruit. Goal- You think that Latin stew w/eggs at the bottom is juevos rancheros, or something different? |

Diablo it comes as part of their "Tico Breakfast". They place a couple fried sunnyside eggs in the bowl then ladle a beef stew concoction over that. Sounds a little gross but I love it and can boast I'm eating like the locals lol. |

The last time I had the steak and eggs breakfast at the Colonial Casino it cost around 1300 colones which is less than $3. It also comes with hash browns and toast. Be careful here because there are two menus, a tico menu and a gringo menu. Make sure you ask for the tico menu or else they will try to offer you the more expensive gringo menu. The colonial is located due west of the delrey, just look for the big concrete columns. I'm not a drinker but I suppose the casino should serve liquor 24 hours a day ??? |

Kudos on the Colonial for breakfast. I make it a ritual every Saturday morning. One more place (you'll have to take a taxi or drive to this one): ARE YOU READY? DENNYS! Yes, there is a dennys and it's part of the Best Western, Irazu on the road to the airport. I know what you're thinking; Why the hell would I want to go to Dennys when they've got a million of 'em in the states? This reccommedation is more for the locals living here. It's like a 30 min. trip or vacation to the states. If you ever get homesick, you have to do Dennys. English is spoken, menu is in english, they have the exact same dishes, ashtrays, salt and pepper shakers. Hell, they even have a Seniors menu for those of us over 55. I'm telling you, its like a 30 min. visit to the states and the quality is the same - especially for breakfast. LVSteve |

A friend of mine works for Denny's inspecting their restaurants for compliance with Denny's specification. His territory includes Costa Rica so he comes here 3 times a year and inspects the restaurant. Almost all there food is shipped in from the Denny's warehouse in Orlando so the quality and taste are the same as in the states. All there managers were trained at the Denny's on Bird Road and 87th Avenue in Miami. PS: They are going to open a second one in the new casino next to the Hampton Inn & Hampton Suites at the airport. |
