Post subject:  lobster
Where is a good place to get lobster? Not a fancy place but a reasonably priced joint were we can get some good lobster. Any ideas?

No lobster here just Caribbean lobster tails. :(

Sorta...what we in FL and the Carib call lobster is really crawfish - agree w/ you - the Maine variety (cold water) is better, although some folks I know do not agree.

There are many varieties of lobster, and I prefer Maine Lobsters. Haven't been able to find any down here, just the scrawnier less tasty species. Plus they've all been frozen, haven't seen any lobster tanks here. Nothing better than a fat juicy Maine lobster grabbed straight from the tank and cooked up the brought straight to your table.

They serve them a lot at the beach. Previous posters are right, not the Maine type. If you ever get to Jaco, they have a lobster feast at Hicaco. It is expensive at $60, but is a fairly decent buffet of assorted seafoods. Never have been impressed with seafood in the city. Not terrible, but tastes frozen. And I wouldn't like my chances eating it too many times. I'm imagining if I ate it six times, I'd have a belly ache at least once.

Thanks guy. I've eaten the buffet at Hicaco several years ago and thought it was good, but not great. I wouldn't pay 60 for it. I like seafood and wanted to try someplace in san jose other than princesa. Didn't that place poison alot of people or am I mistaken?

I am not a marine biologist and do not play one on TV but my understanding is that crawfish and spiny lobster are members of the same family but are different species. Caribbean/Florida spiny lobster are saltwater species while crawfish are fresh water crustaceans.

As (usually) :) , you are probably technically correct - however...in the Caribean, they are refered to as "Crawfish" - I suppose to distinguish them from the "Maine" or cold water variety.

Well I spent 25 years living in So. Florida and spent a lot of time in Jamaica and the Bahamas when I worked with Air Jamaica and everyone in my circle and I every restaurant I remember that had them on their menu called them lobster.

But, whatever you call them they are a poor substitute for clawed cold water lobster and thats really what counts not what you call them IMO. :lol:

I "poached langousta" and they are tasty. Maine lobster are good. One is a cold water species and the other is a warm water species, both are good IMHO opinion depending upon the chef. 8) 8) 8)

A lot of the time I think some restaurants (especially cruise ships) substitute langostinos for lobster, especially if it's not served whole.

One of my fondest memories is when I was 8 or so, I would go out on the lobster boats in New Brunswick with my grandfather. You'd help haul traps for half the day and they would let you take a 5 gallon pale full of fresh lobsters home with you. We had a 45 gallon drum right on the beach besides my grandpa's house where we'd boil them up in sea water and eat them right on the picnic table. :)

Best spiny lobster I had was in Cuba. Found a guy near our resort who had a shack on the beach. All he sold was lobster and beer. $5 for a lobster cut in half and BBQ'd and 75 cents for a Corona :)

There's a few of them around, same owners I think, one of them did get closed for a few days or so for something not right, the one in La Sabana, the only one I've been to, has always been spotless, but who knows. Still very crowded, especially at lunch with the office worker Tico's from that area.
