Had a snack there on Saturday night about 830pm and I have to say to food is terrible. The offerings were tortilla chips, shrimp rice(not fully cooked), white rice(not fully cooked), cubed very fatty salty ham(which they said were chiccronnes, not), cabbage salad, battered fried fish(overcooked) 1200 colones, but food is not fit even for the lovely ladies I met eating it. Had to have a meal later after the very nice chica I met(20mil). Evening after crappy Key Largo food, and meeting an interesting rica chica I don't really know why I'm complaining!

Scenario, it is 2AM in morning, just got finished f*cking the sh*t out of a latina. You have returned to the KL to catch up with any remaining buddies to talk, hang out or watch the remaining gals even though you are totally out of leche.

You are hungry and the options for food are:

1) Chelles

2) Del Mar, offers a wide selection of items but is way overpriced

3) Key Largo Buffet (I think the only reason this exists is to offer the working gals and ticos a cheap alternative for food)

4) Starve, go to bed hungry and famished. Thinking that sunrise can't come soon enough so you can gorge yourself on breakfast.

If you choose #3, the staples are white rice and black beans, cabbage cole slaw, tortilla chips and usually two different types of meat offerings.

Cost is 1500 colones.

I highly recommend Chelles as me and the boys have eaten there many times on the way home from the clubs. I have not had a bad meal there!

That is a no brainer. Chelles has been at that location for over 25 years and is still going strong. A great place and the price is reasonable.

Post subject:  Not for the squeamish

I wasn't going to post this but the mention of the shrimp and rice forces me to.
Back in July, I had the shrimp & rice late on a Friday night. The next day we got on a bus for Nicaragua that was a gruling 7 hours of stop and go on a local type bus. One hour into the trip, I knew I was in trouble. After 2 hours, death would have been a blessing. Stomach pains were coming and going every 10 minutes and my bowels were ready to explode. I was sqeezing as hard as I could to keep from losing it all on the seat.
After 3 1/2 hours, the bus stopped in front of a restaurant to let off some people. I said to my chica, " is this a rest stop?" She said yes and I jumped off the bus. The bus started to drive away. I looked at the drivers assistant with a "what the phuck???? look and he waved me back on the bus. NO WAY was I getting on that bus!
I hold my stomach and yell out "mui infirme, mui infirme" as all passengers are giving me dirty looks. He yells"uno minuto" as I bolt for the restaurant 100 ft. away.
The bano is locked but luckily someone appears to open it. The bano is typical Tico: not clean, no seat, and no paper. Does it slow me down? No.
I took a piece of used paper out of the trash but that wasn't going to help. I used my underwear to clean myself and threw it away. The bano would not flush. I didn't care. I didn't care that I fouled my shorts on the outside. I felt relief and the rest of the ride was pain free.
The bus back was a Nica Express with bano (but bring your own paper).
I have since eaten many meals at KL, but not the shrimp and rice!

Where is Chelles in relation to the DR?

And

I thought there is pretty decent 24 hour food at the DR from the KL kitchen? - they just run it over.

Just walk down the hill from the DR towards the Prez. It is right on the corner of avenida central and calle 9. it is easy to find on proiljo's map.

I've never even thought twice about eating from the KL buffet. I've NEVER been THAT hungry. Its usually pretty well picked over by the girls anyway and what is left looks pretty scary (and I've eaten bugs bought from street vendors in BKK). Chelles is very close and gets my nod for 24/7 cheap eats. Its down the hill on the right on the far corner of the next intersection, just to the left of Mariscar on the same block as the Prez. So for many its on the way home anyway.

Scubabum...that's why its always a good idea to carry a bottle of Pepto Bismol with you. I ALWAYS carry a small bottle of Pepto Bismol in my camera bag/satchel wherever I go in CR, or wherever I travel for that matter.

I heard its the same food as what in the del mar. Its definitely cooked by the del mar maybe it might be better when its fresh. I was never hungry for it also but, I had 2-3 chica in KL ask me to buy them grub. Being the gentlemen that I am . I obliged. I spent about 4 nights there hanging out  I really like it at KL, its truly a better atmosphere to hang out and not be rushed.

It seems to me the food at the Del Mar was better when it was located inside the Del Rey......is that possible?

If you catch the buffet early(before 8) it's not bad. It really is just there for the chicas but if you don't feel like walking/driving away from the gulch, it works if they have decent entrees. I had chicken lasagna and it was fine. It's only $3. I have a few chica friends that don't seem to get a lot of business and since we're friends I buy it for them- they scarf it down. I didn't realize Chelles was right there or I'd have gone there instead. IF they have good entrees and you just want to grab some food early and get back to the DR, it's worth it.

It is food only fit for the chicas, they love it as mentioned. I ate a mouthful at my chicas insistence. It is still the same garbage. It is for drunk really hungry folks late at night. As the cereal commercial used to say, Get Mikey to try it!
