Wow!! ....Cafe Mundo and now Tin Jo. I was never really too impressed with Tin Jo. I felt it was overpriced and with small portions :(.......though I never became ill from the food. I wonder which one will be next? :?

While I've talked to many about the food handling practices at Cafe Mundo, it seems the rash of closings may be due to the fact that restaurant employees are not taking the mandatory classes through La Salud. However, in typical Tico fashion, they're not set up to handle the growth of restaurants and the number of employees who need to take the classes.

A restaurant owner submitted the necessary paperwork, was waiting for the certificate, was given various reasons why it was not at the receptionists desk, and then, they admitted that the paperwork was lost. He had to resubmit everything.

Here's the article in Saturday's "Inside Costa Rica" -

Tin Jo Joins Lists of Restaurant Closures By Health Department

The famous Chinese eatery in downtown San José, Tin Jo, was the latest target of restaurant closures by the Ministerio de Salud. María Luisa Ávila, ministra de Salud, said that her office received a number of complaints that were looked into by her officials, that ended up in the temporary closure of the restaurant. Among other items, Avila said the restaurant did not have a solid waste disposal plan, some employees lacked the food handling license and others in charge of preparing food did not have adequate supplies to do so.

The ministra, in her explanation, said "the work table was dirty, the kitchen very disorganized and foods such as fish, chicken and been were mixed and with no expiration date". "Some products were on the floor near the cleaning supplies and also the restaurant lacked signage for emergency exits", said the ministra. Health officials also found that the walls and floors of the premises were in disrepair. On their Facebook page, the owners of Tin Jo confirmed the closure and pledged to correct the problems. "We are taking steps to correct the deficiencies cited. We deeply regret this inconvenience. Thank you for your understanding of this situation", says the Facebook profile. This is the last of a long list of a series of restaurants closures, among the most notorious closures Cafe Mundo in Barrio Otoya and the McDonalds opposite the Central Bank.

Tin Jo is (was) a popular eatery among the expat community in Costa Rica, as well as Costa Ricans.

That's a shame. I have always enjoyed Tin Jo, though it has been a few years since I was last there.

I am surprised they didn't mentioned the cat that wanders around the restaurant and the kitchen. :)

Tin Jo set to reopen Wednesday
Posted: Tuesday, June 28, 2011 - By Matt Levin
The pan-Asian cuisine restaurant has been a downtown staple for decades.
The Health Ministry has lifted its injunction to the close downtown San José restaurant Tin Jo. The popular pan-Asian cuisine establishment will reopen Wednesday for lunch and dinner during its regular hours.

The restaurant’s owners, Maria Hon and Robert Faulstich, posted messages announcing the reopening on Tin Jo’s Facebook page.

Tin Jo fans expressed support for the restaurant after it was shut down by health inspectors last Friday for health violations.

Health Vice Minister Mauricio Vargas told The Tico Times on Friday that the ministry had received reports of food poisoning from customers. A subsequent health inspection found the restaurant lacked plans for several procedures. Some employees did not have food handling licenses, Vargas said. He also cited sanitary problems, including raw meat, fish and chicken stored together.

Via Facebook, Tin Jo management gave a few short updates to its customers on the cleanup process after the closure.

Shortly before 5 p.m. Tuesday, Tin Jo announced that after five days the restaurant had “fine-tuned and perfected its procedures” and would return with “batteries recharged” and “staff 100 percent motivated.”

The restaurant owners then thanked their loyal clients who had posted hundreds of messages of encouragement during the closure: “We want to give infinite thanks to our many friends and customers that have supported us and illuminated us throughout this process. We are sure that the positive energy and thoughts have allowed everything to progress smoothly. We are very happy to reopen our doors to all so that we an serve you again!”

Attempts to reach the owners have been unsuccessful. The family has been on vacation in China.

mis dos colones...

In the 4 years here in CR I have been there once....this year. Have to say....Pass! Did not enjoy their food or their wine. OK at best. Same goes for Cafe Mundo....next!

Do not fret amigos - believe me - around the downtown area or within a 5 min taxi ride there are many, many great places to eat, drink, and be merry....(sorry MG - merry not gay !)

As for great wine to go along with excellent food - that is another review from this ex-pat, ex-native Californian.... 8)
