Fellas:

I was out and about on Friday with a chica and we went to lunch at La Esquina de Buenos Aires.

This was the only food I ate that day. We ordered beef and chicken empanadas to start. I ate more of the chicken and her more of the beef. Later, we had the lomito con salsa porcini and a nice malbec.

I always eat there every time I am in SJO, and have never had a problem......

Eight hours later, at Club Gramis, I was hanging with my chica and started feeling bad. In the cab back to Dunn Inn, she wanted to go to another club...I mustered my strength and said "OK"....two blocks later, in front of the DR, I was puking my guts out. I told the freaked out cabbie to not worry, all the spew landed on the street, and none in the cab. We got back to Dunn Inn, and I tipped the cabbie double the fare if he wanted to go take it to wash.

Anyway, between trips to the toilet, and being wrapped like a mummy all night with a horrible fever, Melitza stuck with me, rubbing me down with cold, wet towels (I hated that shit...)

The moral of the story is "Watch out for chicken in general" If it tastes sort of funny, leave it alone. I will go back to La Esquina, but I won't order the empanadas.

Chica or whatever, I'd say the Brother picked right--she stayed with him all night through some trying circumstances, when she could have boogied out on him with no blowback. This is where generalities can bite you in the ass. Not trying to pick a fight here...
Sorry to hear about your time of trial, Brother CH0017--hope it was just one of those things. And I won't pimp Diacort to you--but that shit works!

Crazy Horse, Same thing has happened to me on two occasions in Costa Rica. Puking, fever, chills. My initial thought was the food also. Now I'm not so sure. My last dose got so bad I ended up at the doctors and he gave me a shot in the ass that seemed to help. Took a couple days to completely shake it. Good Luck

I wasn't going to say anything, but since someone else has brought it up, I thought I'd better mention my experience at La Esquina de Buenos Aires. One evening of the first week of February, I ate here. I had the beef kabob, along with the waffle potatoes and a salad. Two hours later, I had a high fever, chills, stomach cramps and diarrhea. The fever broke during the night, but the diarrhea lasted for several days. I had the stomach cramps for over a week. I can only assume that the illness came from this restaurant.....my guess, it was from the salad.

In all fairness....this was the first time I ever had a problem at this restaurant. I eat there a lot. I really like the food, the people and the place.

I had a similar experience at JR's Ribs several years ago. I think it was the cole slaw that caused it there.

Zebra, Very similar to my symptoms. The doctor told me I had picked up a "bad bacteria". I couldn't shake the bug. Still not sure.

Actually....I think I'm going to start taking a tablespoon of PEPTO BISMOL each day when I'm in Costa Rica. I have heard that Pepto Bismol contains an anti-bacterial agent, and a tablespoon per day will ward off these intestinal ailments. Webmd.com seems to confirm this.

Well this sure got my blood up so did the research:

Whereas the Diacort I found Googling is an steroid anti-inflammatory by Pfizer with the active ingredient being diflorasone diacetate--what you get in CR may be the same but is very much an off-label usage--nevertheless as a wiser-than-me Brother asserts--THAT SHIT WORKS!

Greengo....I'm impressed.

Six of us ate ther on 9/29 and had a great meal. The food and service was excellent.

My wife, my buddy, and I ate there Aug 31st. This was probably the best steak (lomito porcini) I've ever had there and I've eaten there maybe 20-25 times.

I was there with Buzzfla on 8/29, and was quite impressed. I think my meal, with a cocktail, came to around $28. The beef was actually quite tender.
I would definitely return there. They were very busy that night, every table was taken. Just down the street from Idem.

After being poisoned in a similar fashion in a restaurant in Pattaya, I did a bit of research into what I had gotten... If you show signs of food poisoning within the first 4 hours of consumption, it can't be bacterial as it takes longer for the bug to affect you... Especially if the onset is violent, with diarrhea, vomiting, fever and muscle & abdominal pain... The only thing that hits you that hard, that fast is Staphylococcus... One primary side effect is dehydration and loss of electrolytes...
