I've enjoyed this steak restaurant for a few years, but never gave them a plug here. They have been in business in Escazu for over 50 years. The relish tray they give you is enough for a meal, and it's hard to not fill up with it. My favorite dish is a tender lomito with a Jalapino sauce. It is served with refried beans, grilled plantains and a baked potato. It is only 15-20 minutes from the Gultch right near Tony Romas(which sucks) across from Seretos sp. market.

Tip of the hat to Brother VB for this one--looks like a great place:

Be sure to click on "Discounts"--it's a nice one.

Would second VB review of the restaurant. I have eaten there and always was very satisfied with the food, service and price. I did comment about it about a year ago but can not remember the thread.

Very pricey, but it is the last spot in town I know of where you can have "natural Heart of Palm". The have an appetizer of Natural Heart of Palm, Avacado, and Shrimp that is great. If you have only had the pickled hard version in your life, try this.

I ate there many years ago, I personally though it was over priced and was told by an ex-pat the meat was imported from the U.S. I had a NY Strip .The leather sole of my shoe was'nt as tough. Haven't gone back... maybe it was just my luck.
A cab driver on the last trip told us a good place for steak was "ChiCotes"(Sp) near the Crowne Plaza.?

Yes have eaten there a few times as well, very good steak house, and agree the heart of palms is very good.

The restaurant is El Chicote located in Sabana Norte almost directly across the street from the new stadium. Like la Cascada has been around forever. Good steaks and priced about the same as La Cascada.

Here's their Website. Click on "Ubicacion" for location and contact info:

I've eaten there many times - during our last trip in Jan as a matter of fact -

The food and service are very good, although I don't understand how Costa Ricans can afford the place, b/c thats who you see there - its next to a supermarket, and away from any "tourist" areas - you have to make it a destination.

My 2 favorite steak places are La Cascada, and Donde Carlos (in Los Yoses) - but they are not cheap. (I'd give the overall to Donde Carlos although the hearts of palm are better at La Cascada - DC is a CRT sponsor, too - small discount available w/ the CRT Card).

Overall, the food is not the reason you visit CR - however much I like the country and the people, they don't have a "food" culuture, like Italy, France, parts of the USA, etc - and don't get me started on Chinese food; its the worst in the world in CR!

Totally agree... you don't go C.R. for the food, I'm just as happy with the rice and beans and piece of well done chicken, beef and pork, well it's just not that good to me in C.R.

Well, you "get" me :) :) -

Jesus Christ - Chop phucking Suey :?: :?: Its not even Chinese food (Chop Suey was invented in the USA by Chinese in the late 1800's)

And the addition of ham does not make it any better - if anyone has a suggestion of a decent (or even fair) Chinese res't, I'm all ears.

Chinese food is off the current topic of Cascada. However if you insist.......the best (still not great) to me the Villa Rey in Escazu is about as good as CR gets. I also like Wongs (NOT Dan Wang) The prices and quality are very good. For the guys on vacation here,it is 5 minute walk from Ground Zero. (HDR) That's even convenient for Lee.

O my God - getting off topic on a CRT thread :o  :o - next you are going to tell me all the posts in "Ball Shaving" had to do with just that subject, or at least the proper razor to use :?:  :)

Seriously, thanks for the Chinese res't suggestions, VB - much appreciated! :)
