Post subject: | Restaurante La Palma is it re-opened? |
Was wondering if the La Palma is open again. I had heard it closed and was disappointed as I had the best filet mignon ever in my existence! Would like to know as I will be down in January and I can already taste it, among other things! |

Foreign Affairs MAY be renting the facilities for the day. I will followup on this tomorrow. May have to crash their meeting ![]() Used stuff is around. Price depending on HOW used...but in general pricy compared to USA. Most insiders buy these things new at duty free zone in Golfito. Probably same price as used stuff in town. Dont know THAT much about it to be honest. |

Post subject: | AFA (A Foreign Affair ) Socials at La Palma. |
I spoke with Gustavo at AFA (A Foreign Affair) about the Socials at La Palma. Egads!...he says that he is now charging gringos $150 for the privilege of meeting any of a couple of dozen hopeful ticas that he invites to the Social on Saturday evening. When I stopped by a few weeks ago (without having to pay that fee!) I saw about 20 or so ticas and about 6-8 gringos there. I think this price includes a buffet dinner and drinks, but THE PRICE seems excessive to me. I am fortunate in that I met my tica thru Gustavo just over a year ago, when the introduction price was just $25. Of course, In the end, it is a matter of your own judgment. |

Thanks Tman for the info. It's a shame the " Peruana Lesbiana " isn't the chef there anymore as she did an excellent job. Do you know of any other great restaurants of that caliber and price walking distance from the gulch? That is within 3 to 4 blocks. |

Post subject: | Bar at La Palma/Hotel Castillo |
Staying at Hotel Castillo, one of the perks was having the bar from La Palma, "open," for our use (byo). This was supposed to change when it reopened. Has anybody on this forum been to the bar in back recently? Hotel Castillo breakfast moved there the last week before I came back the the US to work, and there was always some sort of minor construction project going on. |

Slutdog...There are a few nice restaurants in that neighborhood. Up the hill from La Palma 1 blocks is Cafe Mundo...great fresh breads and homemade soups are their specialty in my opinion. SOme of the best ribs in town are at JRs...which is back next to the zoo...down the hill to the north from La Palma. The new open air cafe at the Hotel Plaza Amon is improving, and I notice a number of attractive women eating or hanging out there these days. I havent been there yet, but heard that Baiku...one block east of the Amon is a great place for exotic foods. Will try and give it my personal review this next week. And finally, Sportsmens Lodge opened this weekend and they have a very good TexMex cook in my opinion. A lot of us sampled that on the 1st Anniversary weekend bash. It is 1 block up the hill from La Palma and 25 mts north. Nice new signs to make the place easier to spot. Have fun... |

The bar in the back is open for a few hours in the evening. They have decent food, though limited in menu, and a pretty barmaid. It seems to just have residents at Hotel Castillo there so far, but the restaurant is supposed to open again soon. |

The cute adolescent appearing barmaid is Gustavo's wife. They still charge $25 for Tica's out of the book. |

Post subject: | Food at the bar |
The beef and/or chicken brochettes are quite good and come with a salad and baked potato. They also have steaks. They also have chorizo brochettes, but I haven't tried them. Some folks from the outside have been coming to the bar for the last day or so, which is nice. It opens at 5 and closes at 9, but these are both Tico time, so there are no guarantees. They are open Tuesday through Sunday. |

Post subject: | Chef Jose is here |
The chef is here and is working on a menu with Southwest/French influence. He has experience with four and five star restaurants in Boston. They plan to serve food from 11 AM til 10 PM and serve tapas until 11 PM. They'll try to be open within a week or two. Come on in and give it a try. I'll be back in the US when it opens, so let me know how it is. |
