If you’re looking for someplace a bit different  to take your amiga for dinner, I’d like to recommend Olio.

Olio is a Mediterranean style restaurant located a few miles east of the Gulch.
Best time to go is after 8pm (Closed on Sundays). The restaurant is located next to the train tracks, and the train runs until about 8pm making conversation a little strained.

The food is reasonably priced, and the service, variety and quality are all excellent.
(The waiter from the previous night just smiled and shook his head when I arrived with a different dining partner on another night.)

We started with drinks and an appetizer of hummus…Strong Margaritas and tasty hummus. For dinner, I had the Chicken Parmigianino, and my date had the chicken caeser salad. We both liked our food.
The crowd is very local…looks like a popular place for a date-night…lots of couples.

Directions: Eastbound on Pan American Hwy. towards Mall San Pedro…Once past the KFC (on right) look for Bagelman (on left @ Calle 33)…Need to pass Bagelman and then make a U-turn at next street…Take immediate right onto Calle 33…Olio is three blocks up on the right side (at railroad tracks).

Every girl that I have taken to Olio has had a great time…which translates into an awesome experience when we get back to my place. Girls have told me that dinner at Del Mar or Colonial Casino is nice (and expensive) but takes no effort…While a visit to Olio shows some initiative, and makes her feel special.

A La Votre!

Just across the street from Intensa Spanish School, same calle as L'Ancora a few blocks north.

Another is L' Ancora has some of the best meat in Costa Rica- compared to Buenos Aires and all the tourist places. Prices are better if paid in cash 20% discount.

Let your amigas eat rice and beans at home, don't spoil them or you will be paying too much.

Great post, I was going to do the same, as I also recommend Olio Pub y Restaurante.

During last trip on Tuesday, 11-23-10, first night in town, had a “dinner date” scheduled with favorita. When she arrived at LA, I told her that it was her choice tonight as to where to go for dinner. She smiled, kissed me and said vamos. Hopped in a taxi and in 5 minutes/$ 2,000 colones, we were there.

Crowded, but we were seated right away. Great atmosphere (except when train came by), great food and service, overall menu had interesting variety and the menu was in both Espanol and Ingles.
The night we were there, they had a guitarist and a gringa vocalist singing American rock tunes in Ingles from the 80’s and 90’s (Fleetwood Mac, Eagles, Carly Simon, etc.).

Really a warm and comfortable atmosphere…….maybe it was because both me and my favorita had been discussing for the past month in steamy emails what our night was going to be like!!!

From my receipt:

Olio Pub y Restaurante
200 N de Bagelmens, Escalante
Bo. Escalante, San Jose
2281-0541
Email: olio@ice.co.cr

Sangria………………….$ 2,400 colones
Grey Goose/cranberry….. 4,300
Ensalada Griega for 2…... 3,400
Lasagna de pollo……….. 3,700
Carpacio Combinado…… 5,500

Total w/tax & servicio $ 23,750

Will definitely go back to Olio again and the waiter will probably be smiling and shaking his head at me as I bring in different “dinner dates” over my 4 nights in town!!

Just don't let them seat you in the back on a busy night as it can get Extremely smoky to the point that its hard to enjoy your dinner as there is no ventilation.
Even the smokers in our group noticed how smoky it was.

I always sit by a window in the front for this reason. Also recommend the Chicken Parmigiana.

Great Sangria and house red wine also, get some apps and the chicas will definitely appreciate the effort. As stated before, the Argentinian steak house in the area is top notch but they also have a lite dress code both are great date or buddies places, but never really saw a social scene or bar to flirt with the gupas. :D

Across from Olio is "Hamburg" for those of you like me who enjoy Euro food with great beers....

Then diagonal from Olio is the Cheesecake Factory...... :D

great corner, great places, I will shoot some pics for the "RR" since I have a "meet" there later this afternoon.....

Here's their TicoParty.com listing with tel. #:
http://www.ticoparty.com/Bares-Costa-Rica/Olio-Pub-Bar/

Not for nothing but in Googling this place, the first listing was in a gay guide. Just saying...
