I stayed at the Castillo and figured I would try Las Palmas. I am searching for the right word for not good, ah, bad. I go to the bar with my lady and order. I get the shrimp parmesan appetizer and she gets the sea bass (think it was the Chilean). I discovered why they call it Chilean. They must have called Chile after we orded it, because it took over half an hour for the food. Ok, not the end of the world, the food comes. My appetizer was in four oyster shells, looked nice. But, they forgot the shovel for me to dig through all the cream sauce to find 4 tiny pieces of popcorn-size shrimp in each shell (note, Orville Redenbacher microwaved popped kernels are considerably larger, almost 2X, so no offense to the popcorn industry). Now, the cream sauce was, hmm, interesting. It reminded me of thick, shelf bought turkey dressing, with that gelatinous texture. I look at my lady's dish and there is this mound of veggies. It looked like it was a thick stew. We both look at it and think that the bass was chopped up in the stew. So she moves the stew over (could have used that shovel that I referenced earlier), and she found it. The four inch by two inch piece of bass. I type words because it may be larger than the piece of fish she received, given larger font size. So, she takes a bite, I ask her how it is. She says ok. She gives me a bite, it was, let me see if I can find a synonym for bad, ah, not good. The only reason, that I enjoyed anything, was because I was with a wonderful lady. So the check comes, 15K colones ($30 for the nonmathametician). We had no drinks. So, I go to my room to get money, noticing an empty restaurant, not surprised at all. While we were eating, my friend Matt, owner of the Amistad was there. We were talking a bit. Anybody that knows Matt realizes I was not talking much so I add the word a bit ![]() ![]() So, if you ever want to go to Las Palmas, make sure you have a beautiful and understanding lady with you. Beautiful, you will have something to look at while you wait for your food. Understanding, I hope she understands that you did not know the food was so bad. But hey, we live and we learn. I do not know know who the owner is, nor if it associated directly with the hotel. But, I do have some advice as a restaurant worker and owner almost all of my life. You have a long road ahead of you. Peacefully Dean |

Yeah, that place has been a virtual "black hole" for restaurants for quite some time. Service has always sucked and food not so good. At least they are consistent at sucking ![]() |

It is a pity this place is so visible to every newbie going from the SL to NF or HLH. It always looks like a place you would like to try out. It is surprisingly terrible. Extraordinarly bad service. Food can be tolerable sometimes. Best avoided. |

I walk by the place a lot, and never have the desire to go in, it just screams "pretentious" to me. I'd rather eat at the SL or go get some spaghetti at Pizza Akropolis. ![]() |

When you have to wait 20 minutes for a cup of coffee and a beer, as was my experience recently...and there's nobody else in the place...Ah, the words unspoken. Just a damned shame, given its location. |

Yes Jazzbo, given that the service problem could be fixed easily, I see no excuse for it. |

I see it all the time in SJ and my desire is not to throw stones, but lots of issues can be fixed with the subtle or not so subtle application of a boot to the ass. I like the service at the Dunn Inn and a little tip does wonders to get things super efficient. However sometimes at other similar places, the bar crew is content to shoot the shit while the bell has clearly gone off for the breakfast special. Just saying.... ![]() ![]() |

You might not believe it of me given my persona but I am also a believer in firmly-applied footwear when necessary. Never in public and seldomly-applied but when all else fails... |

Okay, this is not so recent, but I went there for dinner in may 2009. There were not a lot of people there, however, I thought that the ambiance was nice. My "date " and I had the seafood for two (or whatever they call it). I found the service to be slow but the food to be very good. I suppose if you speak no spanish and your girl speaks no english, it could feel like an eternity, however, most Tico restaurants aren't known for their speedy service. All and all, it was a good experience. Just observing and reporting guys.... |
