Does anybody know the location of the German restaurant that opened in the last few years? I think it is in Barrio Escalante. The chef had worked at the German Club earlier, and the food there was excellent. |

Not sure if it is the same one but it may be if it is a german club as well. Los Yoses, de la casa italia, 400 al este. |

I think that's where the chef used to cook. The food was very good three or four years ago. I was there with one other Gringo, but the rest of the customers were all native German speakers. It was like some places in Pavas. It's a long time since I've spoken a lot of German, but I can still get by, but they also spoke some Spanish there. I met a German at the Prez a year ago who wanted to go to the new place, but we didn't make the connection the next evening. |

It may be the German restaurant in Escalante near Barrio Dent. Cant remember the street, but if you go from downtown toward San Pedro Mall on the main drag, you will see a Bagelmanns on the left. That street going behind and past Bagelmanns leads you to railroad tracks. Second restaurant on the right is a newer German restaurant. I havent eaten there, but have heard good things about it. Cant even remember the name, but it's easy to spot. |

I now there is a fairly new restaurant owned by germans right behind the mall, next to Jade Hotel, It's named Jurgens Grill. I Have heard good things about it but a bit pricy.... Hope this helps Mente |

The german resturant that TMan refers to is Cafe Heidleburg and it has red Bavaria sign outside. His directions are right on. The one in Los Yoses is a German Club but the resturant which is called Resturant Union is open to the public Mon. thru Sat. Its just off avenida 8 about 5 block west of the Spoon. LVSteve |

The restaurant I was looking for is Restaurante Hamburgo. It is at the corner of A. 5 and C. 33 in Barrio Escalante. The owner is Rolf from Hamburg and his wife is a Peruana named Roberta. They are open for lunch and dinner. The food is rich but good. Rolf came out and sat with us for a while and talked. I don't think they had anything on the menu for over 3300c. Warsteiner was a more expensive than Imperial, as one would expect, but the food and prices were great. It is a place with 3 languages going on with CR radio playing Purple Haze in the background. If you speak any German or Spanish, start with them. I started with German and was treated like a long lost pal. The phone number is 225-6167 On the way back, we passed Restaurante Zermatt, which was recommended to me years ago by a Swiss businessman at the BM. It is at A. 11 and C. 23. I'll have to try it sometime. Its phone number is 222-0604. Rolf gave me a free map from www.costaricaguide.info that has locations and details of many items around town. I have better maps of SJ, but this one could be very useful, if nothing else to get Gringo style directions to places. |

I used to go to a restaurant run by a guy who was half German and half Chinese. The food was pretty good, but an hour later you were hungry... FOR POWER! |

I seem to recall that Zermatt changed hands and is something else now. Has anybody been to Hamburgo recently? When I talked to Rolf the sumer beore last, he was planning on staying in business until he retired in a few years. |

There is a German restaurant about a block or two from Santa Teresita church in or near Barrio Escalante that I've been wanting to try out. I believe the name is Club or Cafe Hamburg. Last week, my friends and I ate at Restaurante Europea Union in Los Yoses, a German restaurant owned by a lady from Cologne. The schnitzel was pretty good, but she was unable to deliver on the spaetzle. Overall, pretty good value for the money. Peace, |
