We are staying in San Jose be fore flying out the next day. The guys on our trip are usually tired of seafood after 10 days and would like steaks. My experience with beef in c.r. is that it's not the best. Question, I went to a place called La Cascada about 12 or so years ago and was wondering if it is still open. I am not sure where it was located, up in the hills if I remember correctly. Anyway, anybody know this place? |

It is located 600m west and 25m north of Puente Los Anonos in San Rafael de Escazú. Their number is 2228 0906. Reportedly, it actually went way downhill for a while in the time since you were last there but is back to its old form with the return of its original chef. Easier way to go from the gulch is to tell the taxi driver 100 meters east 25 meters north of the Escazu Hipermas behind the Shell station. |

La Esquina de Buenos Aires has good beef. It is a block up from Tin-Jo on the corner. CH |

La Cascada has excellent current reviews on TripAdvisor.com, one of which mirrors Brother Prolijo's comment (up, then down, now up again). Google the venue for details. Have to put that on my list. OTOH, both La Esquina and Donde Carlos Steakhouse are CRT Sponsors and thus offer a discount to CRT VIPs. Hint, hint. |

www.elchicote.com/en_index.asp BBQ place is a bit of misnomer if you are thinking it is like a BBQ in the states. It is mostly a steakhouse and because they use an open grill they refer to is as a BBQ. I think it is one of those English terms that are a bit confusing to native Spanish speakers. Anyway it is a great place for steak and more. I was introduced to it in the early nineties by an amigo from Florida who was living in Sabana Sur. |

It is mostly a steakhouse and because they use an open grill they refer to is as a BBQ. I think it is one of those English terms that are a bit confusing to native Spanish speakers. Barbacoa is actually a Taino term that migrated to Spanish and subsequently English. It originally refered to grilling meat over a fire pit. So if they have an open grill and they cook meat on it, technically they are a barbacoa or BBQ. Brothers Jazzbro, Planenutz69 and Irish Drifter -- thanks for mentioning this El Chicote place. Based on the pictures on their website, I believe I ate there back in 1996 and I really liked it, but after all of these years I couldn't recall the name or the location. Thanks, you guys rock! ![]() Mis dos cheles, mh |

I take back most of what I have said about beef in Costa Rica. On the average it rates with shoe leather but I recently ate at La Esquina de Buenos Aires near MP Relax and had the lomita in bernaise sause. It was tender, tasty and extremely well prepared. Though not cheap, it was a fantastic dining experience. |

I like El Chicote - the babybeef is good and the homemade totillas with condiments are excellent. |

Bill at the Sportsmans Lodge is now buying his steaks from Don Fernandos in Escazu. At his recommendation the other night,I had a very tasty ribeye. The cost for a steak with potato, salad and salsa was around 10,000 col.which is the cheapest around for this quality. |
