I have an art teacher at UACA friend who sees me now and then and she asked me to meet her at Plaza Colonial in Escazu at a place called Don Fernando. They have a meat case to choose your steak and it is cooked in front of you so to speak. We picked a New York strip for 4,800 colones and split it along with a split salad and baked potato . We also had 2 bowls of soup and a little sausage plate with 2 cups of coffee. The bill was like $ 23.00 and the meal was great. So if you are out in Escazu go to Plaza Colonial and try Don Fernando. The hours are 11-4 Mon. thru Thurs. And 11-9 Fri .and Sat. |

No. Hooters is in the plaza across from Pricesmart/Hospital CIMA on the Pista. Don Fernando is in Escazu San Raphael. You would get off the pista at the Escazu exit where Hipermas/EPA are located and go to the intersection where Scotia bank is bear to the right and Plaza Colonial is 200 meters on the left. DF is in Plaza Colonial. |

Thanks for the tip. I love a good steak and they haven't been so easy to find in CR. Especially at that price. I do enjoy the steak at the White House but you pay through the nose. PURA VIDA! |

The great part about restaurants is everyone can have the same meal and walk away with totally different opinions. My take on Don Fernandos is somewhat different then Greengo's (assuming my Captain Obfuscate decoder ring translated it correctly) in that I find the beef much better then available at most markets. While it does not match the imported beef from the White House I like it. YMMV. |

So in Greengo's case when he picks a piece of meat, they should hand him a BFH then after he's had his way with it, soak it in pure MSG marinade for a week or so, but for the rest of us it's pretty OK? Gives "beating your meat" a whole different slant, doesn't it? |

Ahhh yeah....ahhh no....Truthfully I stopped understanding this thread after ID gave the directions to the place. I owuld start worrying about my mental health if I started understanding Senor Greengo. Ive never eaten AT Don Fernandos but I have bought quite a bit from the meat market since it is a few minutes from where I live. I guess I would say that "for Costa Rica" the quality is very good. |

Was at the Lindora location for lunch today, had a tasty Rib Eye, grilled sausage, soup and mushroom salad. My friend had the same. With a couple drinks it was like $30. Only complaint is the Rib Eye, although very tasty, was ordered rare and cooked probably medium rare to medium. I don't think they know rare in CR. |

Maybe they listen to the US FDA which says--"No no naughty naughty" and make you sign a waiver when you try to order "rare" in a US restaurant. The Nanny State triumphant. This from a liberal...Yes, my ox is being gored here...but I can't get even that cooked "rare". |

What CR needs is for somebody to introduce a large meat animal to the economy that thrives on hilly, grassy terrain. I'm thinking llamas or alpacas, both of which have multiple uses. Somebody's missing a bet here. And then there's sheep (lamb being in sadly short supply in CR). |
