Brother Estebanh has hipped us to a Website mentioning great empanadas. The author of the article linked to, lives with her husband in SJO and has her own Website on all things food in CR (restaurant mentions, recipes, a link to an organic food purveyor that delivers, etc). Here tis': www.cheapfoodhere.com She's not a rookie to this; she came down from Charlotte and had this thing going on there.
Restaurants mentioned on her site are Flor de Loto for Chinese (SJ), Don Fernando for steak (Escazu), Jettsy for burgers (Pavas) and Pollos Male for chicken (SJ). The challenge for you on-the-ground guys is to find'em and report on them.

That is a great blog, pointing to all kinds of food that looks really good. Also the chicken picatta he cooks is just the way I like to prepare it. There is poor food in the gulch (except for KL), para mi es una direcione nuevo, but this points a guy in a new direction.

Don Fernando has a couple of locations. I go to the one in Escazu which is located in Plaza Colonial. They started as a butcher shop and then added the restaurant next store. The beef is excellent for Costa Rica beef. Not quite to U.S. standards but very good compared to what you find at the supermarkets here. I actually use the retail store more frequently then the restaurant. Pollo Malo is in Escazu centro a block north of the church. features chicken roasted over wood as is very common in San Jose. Is very good but I do not think it is that much better that anyone should go to Escazu from San Jose for.
