Post subject:  Cafe Mundo - Good Place to Take Your Novia

I stumbled upon Cafe Mundo while staying one block away at Hotel la Amistad about 4 years ago. Don’t worry about Hotel la Amistad, as it is for high school and church groups departing for eco-tours.

Cafe Mundo is hard to find, even if you know it is at Avenida 9/Calle 15. There is no street sign, and it is surrounded by a large wall covered with vines. If you know where New Fantasy Massage Parlor is located on Avenida 9, Cafe Mundo is 3 and one-half blocks up the hill to the east.

This is an excellent place to take a novia. I have taken working girls there who grew up in San Jose and didn’t even know it existed, but they all loved it. I have noticed an inordinate number of weak-wristed men there, so I suspect this is a favorite place for gays. That doesn’t bother me if I have pretty young Tica on my arm.

As you enter the gate, you see a beautiful old Victorian mansion. Walk up the stairs to a front-porch dining area which is very nice but usually crowded. Go into the mansion and walk around. You will find several dining rooms and two bar areas. Go to the right side of the house and walk all the way through to the outdoor courtyard behind the mansion. This is my favorite area, as usually there are not many people back there and you can find a romantic candle-lit table for you and your novia.

They serve international cuisine including many Italian entrees, steak, pork, chicken and seafood. I took novias here on two occasions this last trip. We had an excellent seafood fettucini the first night, and chuletas (pork chops) the next. A full-course meal with two glasses of wine each was only about 16,000 colones ($36).

The only problem is finding a taxi back to the gulch late at night. This trip, the first night, there was an outlaw taxi that took us home for 2000 colones. The second night there were no taxis. The walk down the hill takes you right into Parque Morazan which is dangerous. We wound up walking one block north and one block east to Hospital Caulderon-Guardia where there are many taxis. If I go there late at night again, I will negotiate with a taxi driver to come back in 1 1/2 to 2 hours to retrieve us.

Give this place a try and let me know what you think about it.

I agree this is a wonderful place to go but I have to disagree about recommending the back courtyard. The table I had when I was there had extremely uncomfortable bench seating

I go there at least once every trip. I always sit on the front porch surrounded by trees. The ladies also love the place. Good pasta and excellent pastries hmmmmmmmmmm
