I was browsing all the restaurant reviews and did not see anything written about Mariscar. It is located a couple doors down from the presidente just past the Presidente casino. Their specialty is whole roasted marinated chicken. I ate there twice on my last trip. I chose the quarter dark chicken combo #3 which comes with a quarter of chicken, white rice, mashed black beans, cole slaw, corn tortillas and either a mango or guava juice. The price was 1095 colones which is $2.50 The chicken was well marinated, delicious and moist. The restaturant is bigger than I had anticipated as there is a larger room with seating and some sort of water pond in the rear. |

A hell of a lot better than that shit called KFC just up the street. I ate there probably 10 times on my 30 day trip last month Love that place. I even picked up a non-pro in there one day! McMonger |

I agree, that KFC was the shittiest chicken I've ever eaten. ![]() I saw VB eating chicken with oyster sauce one night at Mariscar that looked good, my roasted bird was great. The Rosti pollo was pretty good, a pricey franchise with decent atmosphere. And I still say the best fried chicken I've had in SJO is the chicken strips at Burger King, there is a 4 minute wait while they pluck the bird and cook it. |

You sure that wasn't fur instead of feathers in that place ? I cold have sworn I heard a lot of excited and scared "meowing" coming from the back room of that place. Reminds of the time I thought the guy on the corner with the charcoal brazier was talking with a "lisp". "Hola Senor, how bout some roasted beast" ? I really thought he meant beef. I guess I thought the USDA.....naw I didnt, welcome to CR. McMonger |

As you exit the Presidente and head downhill, you cross the big boulevard and on the left hand side is Pollo Campesino, a great chicken place roasted over native hardwoods. It's run by chinese, inexpensive and great for a morning after! |

Joe, It is easy to overlook things when you just browse, besides you can only see the title. Try using the search function next time. Here is the link to the orginal CRT Gourmet review from a few months back http://www.costaricaticas.com/phpbb2/viewtopic.php?t=1139&highlight=mariscar. there have also been numerous mentions in trip reports. I'd like to second Migrant's recommendation of Pollo Campesino. It is usually overlooked because it is on the "wrong" side of avenida 2, but it is very good and even cheaper than Mariscar (Mariscar is still more convenient and has better atmosphere). If I don't go to Mariscar I try to go to Campesino at least once each trip. |

I agree completely with you about KFC. You only go there when everyother place in the WORLD is closed! |
