How is this place?

Brother Harry runs a clean, small, funky mixed Tico/Gringo place (more Ticos in the afternoon). A smaller TV with American sports. Gets some play in the dining room from Pangea Hostel down the block. Occasional Chica or 2 but look elsewhere for quality. Happy Hour every afternoon gets a good play from Hotel Marruecos residents. Good filling food--Bifsteak platter at about $5, etc--nice bocas available. Chicago sports fan. I make it a point to drop in on visits 'cuz I like the guy. When he's not there, he'll be upcountry at his ranch. Good security to keep the beggars and riff-raff out (other than me, I mean). Allows the trannys on the corner to use the toilet and maybe buy a beverage with the understanding they leave alone folks exiting. Right across the street from Hotel Santo Tomas.
In sum, a nice place for an afternoon's cooling beverage and maybe to wind up the day.

they always have great tunes playing and the beer is cheap too. a nice mellow little place to hang out and talk with some veterans who have been in CR for a long time.

Hmmm :? ....I wonder if they use the mens', or the ladies' room?

That would be a shock....standing in the mens' room taking a leak, and a person in a skirt comes up to the urinal beside you and pulls up his/her skirt.

...And has a bigger dick. But seriously I deliberately didn't look at which one they used. All I know is the system Harry has seems to work.

Friendly staff and good eats. The chili con carne is almost as good as what I make at home! I had a nice bbq pork sandwich last week. It wasn't quite like what we would get at home but the pork was tender, lean and savory. 1600 colones.

I have walked by that place a hundred times and never stopped in. Based on these comments, think I will eat there soon. Thanks.

Where is it?

It is directly up the hill from the HLH / ZB. When you get to the top it is to your right. Do not expect elegance. Think local, think rustic, think lots of personality.

Avenue 7 at Calle 3B which is between Calle 3 and 5.

A great place. When I'm in town I'm there every day after Marruecos and before Musas, or is that the other way around? Oh well, a good place to chill and plan the days activities. You'll meet a lot of interesting people, a lot of locals, and the food is good. When Martha is cooking you can't miss. My favorite, a bowl of chifrio, a plate of wings and a cold Tona. If you stop in tell Harry I said hello.

I'm glad to see this place get its own Thread--it's long overdue. Kinda puts me in mind of a funky watering hole in a sleepy Latin American capital in the '40's-'50's where one might meet locals and expat gentlemen adventurers, dropping in from Whoknowswhere on the way to Whatthehell with a load of Yourtakingthatthere?, along with an over-the-hill Chica or two, and run by a guy with no illusions left (sorry, Harry)--And who is that guy in the corner with his back to the wall, looking fretfully between his watch and the front door? Boy, do I have a vivid imagination! Or do I?

Harry's is a great neighbourhood place with a nice mix of Gringo expats, backpackers and Ticos. Harry's from Rockford IL and a Die Hard Cubs Fan. The food is good and very reasonably priced and I don't know what radio station that is that he's got tuned in but it's great. Occassionaly a working girl will come in but that's about it.

The Senioritos may have a couple of quick shots at the bar near the door but they don't bother anyone and they use the womens's toilette.

My guess is that if he turned off the Cubs games and turned the Dodgers on instead you would see the place immediately pack up with hot chicas
