tonico604, its in la sabana about a block in from pollo campereos going towards san jose, they are a japanese izakaya which is like a bar food tapas like lounge. they have great seafood and meats, all imported and top quality and the spring rolls and wings are unbelievable.....i think the kitchen is open late like around midnight as well, it does get busy later with djs and music and stuff but great food and ambiance

So, you just joined the forum and your first post is a pitch for your "favorite" resturaunt? You forgot to mention your financial ties to this establishment.

Let me guess, the speciality of the house is SPAM!

While totally agreeing with Brother Western's post, let's not throw the baby out with the bathwater. Need a report from one of our gourmet reviewers. Meanwhile here's their website: www.tonico604.com includes an explanation of what izakaya is--looks like a youth-oriented place to me
And here's something of a review from chowhound: http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/513205 comment # 4

Think there might be a rush to judgment here. Guy has 14 total posts and while many of the mention Tonico604 he also recommends many other restaurants in the Central Valley.

So I went based on Livin's advice. It is run by a couple of Canadians. It is more of a scene then a real Japanese Izakaya. I lived in Japan for a number of years. There are no real Japanese there. The good points -- the food is actually pretty good. I am really into house music so I liked the vide, It was a little young crowd for me (I'm 40).

The Japanese embassy recommended Bambu in Escazu. I will try that in a couple of weeks when I return at the end of June.

Brother Hanshin Baka--Thanks for backing me up on a point I tried to make in another Thread--If a country has an Embassy here and you like the nation's cuisine--ask the Embassy. They won't be going out for "chump" food.

It may be the same place. The woman at the embassy said it was in Escazu and owned by Japanese. The other places she recommended were Nakama and Ajoya.

Thanks for the information on Tonico -- I had a good time and the food was fine. It was just a young crowd for me.

ya probably same place...where are the other two you mentioned though, ive never heard of them. my best bet in town here is fuji but its ridiculously priced. ill have to try bambu soon, if you beat me to it please let me know. ya na no problem on the tonico rec, although ive never been to japan myself im pretty sure its not typical izakaya but its more westernized, similiar to some ive been to in LA and New York, anyway the food is good, but it does get a bit loud and younger type crowd later. i just like it cause its different than anything else here...

I will be back next Friday (6/26) and planning on hitting up tonico on Sat. I've been to Fuji -- pricey. Nakama and Ajoya are in Curiddabat. If you're in Tonico Saturday and see a blonde hair businessman in a suit, say hello.
