Where I can get good fresh Snapper (and i MEAN the REAL snapper), swordfish etc...etc. Had some great seafood in Puerto Viejo last year but was wondering whether any recommended places in San Jose. Thx.

My two favorite places for seafood in San Jose are "Soda Peru" (about 40 mts south of Zona Blue and on the other side of the calle) and Machu Picchu (across the street from Oasis massage parlor on Calle 32).

What is a mts ? How much is the price usually go for dude .

mts is meters. Distances are expressed in meters in CR. However when giving directions meters are really not distance. 100 meters means 1 block and that block my be very short (50 actual meters) or very long (3 or 400 hundred actual meters). I know it is confusing at first glance but you become accustom to it.

In the case of Soda Peru 40 meters is about the actual distance, If a tico where giving the same directions he would most likely say 25 meters meaning a quarter of the block.

Take the road toward San Pedro, just as you cross the rail road tracks there is a one-way street to the right. Go about 50 meters down the hill and the hotel is on your left. A cabby would know where it is.

My recommendation would be to catch your own, and take it back to SL and have the cook prepare it.

I just hope you don't have my luck. I always get skunked in CR when I go fishing.

The sea bass special at Il Ritorno was fantastic when I had it last week. One of the best pieces of fish I've ever tasted!

There are several fish markets all over CR and fresh fish is available at the local ferias.

There are a couple of fish markets just north of the Pantera Rosa on the main road from downtown toward Dsamparados.

A great place for a reasonably priced meal of fish or mariscos is Princess Marina. There are several around CR, but I usually go to the one at the west end of Parque Sabana. Any taxista can take you there. It's right across from the SW corner of the park.
Last summer one of their locations in another town got busted by the health department for unsanitary practices in the kitchen. For months afterward you could go into any of their locations and find the places almost empty.
But they cleaned up their act and paid their fines. I've never gotten sick from eating there and I've enjoyed their food many times.

I always eat at the one at LaSaban and never had a problem, but I have seen posts on this board that it was more than just the one time the poster refers when people got sick.

Haven't been there since the incident but it used to be you couldn't find a table at lunch time--full of Tico's from the office bldgs around the park, and very crowded at peak dinner hs.

I'd give it a try again. The place was always spotless and shiny clean.

I like the Balcon de Mariscos in Curridabat. It is a moderately priced family place; rustic but nice.

Go through San Pedro on the road toward Cartago, past the EPA, and onto to the Balcon de Mariscos which is on the left side of the road. If you get to the Range Rover dealership you went too far.

The best fish I have ever had was at the Restaurant Le Bergerac inside the Hotel Le Bergerac. It is upscale but not an unreasonably priced place. It is elegant and refined and the service was superb.

Take the road toward the San Pedro Mall. There is a stop light at the corner where the rail road tracks cross the street to the left. You will see a scuba diving school on the left. At that “T” intersection, turn right and go down the hill about 50 meters. The hotel and restaurant are on your left.

I have had some good seafood in Peruvian restaurants in San Jose... Inka Grill is pretty good, but my favorite is the one in San Pedro, but the name escapes me.
