Post subject:  Taj Mahal - Believe it or not, great Indian food in CR
As the title says, there is a great Indian restaurant in Costa Rica. Its a bit of a drive from the Gulch and is located in Escazú but the food is worth the effort.

The food seems to be cooked authentically as witnessed by watching the chef cook outside in a real tandoor (a clay oven). The tika and nan are brilliant as were the curries and lamb biriani. The beer selection is a bit limited. They had no Taj Mahal or Kingfisher beers which are the most commonly found Indian beers but Imperial always does the trick for me...

The place is in an old house just off a side street. Its quite dark but they have a doorman/security to greet you and see you inside safely. Once in, you go down some stairs into the dining room. The back of the dining room leads to a terrace which I am sure is great to sit out during the dry season.

If you fancy a little spice in your life other than from the gulch, give it a try. There is plenty of choice from mild and creamy to hot and spicy. (no pun intended) :oops:

One thing to note, its not cheap. Worked out about $25 per head for food and booze.

Can you tell me what it's close to that I might know? I always rent a car while in CR so anything you can tell me that might help me find the place would be appreciated.

It's 1km west of Centro Comercial Paco en Escazú Calle Vieja a Santa Ana.

Its 100% true, Taj Mahal is very good. I was shocked when I had the food. Ive been eating Indian food for 20 years now and love it. I never thought I'd see it here...You just never know in this country. :)

I eat at Taj Mahal all the time. It's good food. Not the best Indian i've ever had, but nowhere near the worst, and excellent for Costa Rica.

It's on the old road from Escazu to Santa Ana, as you climb up the hill. Technically, i think it's in Guachipilin. If you know where Plaza Paco is (Il Panino, used to have Tres Fatelli), it's about 1Km west.

I like their Chicken Tika Masala. And if you like it spicy, make sure to tell them Hindu spicy, not Tico spicy. They're used to toning it down for locals.

BTW, I asked them about their lack of Kingfisher and Taj Mahal, and the problem is these beers are not imported into Costa Rica, so they can't get them.

definetly agreed taj mahal is great indian for costa. i tried the new place in santa ana, (dont remember name) but not half as good, taj has great nan, beef vindaloo, butter chicken and chutneys as well.....oooh and the lentil soup is great as well
