I used to know a little place in the red light district (the Tico one) where I could get a great eggs and gallo pinto breakfast for around $2.50 (1275 c), with coffee. But it's not there any more. It was very small but clean and it was like having your (Tico) aunt serve you breakfast. Anyone know of such a place? You can PM me if you don't want to share it with the whole world. Also, looking for a place like the News Cafe USED to be, where you can get your omelette made how you like right in front of you. But maybe cheaper than the News Cafe? Plus, I hate to support the Presidente since they've become so anti-monger. Eff 'em. I don't mind paying $7 or so for a great breakfast buffet if it's like the News Cafe USED to be. |

i used to go to the tico joints near the central market area early in the morning. places along calle 6 and near the intersection of avenida 5. lots of small cafes fronting the sidewalks. one little hole in the wall, and i mean hole in the wall, next to the stairway leading up to a tico MP (Pensiones?) was a favorite. i think a glass (not a cup) of coffee was like 15 colones and eggs with some kind of mystery meat was a dollar more. and, for bonus points, you can treat some of the little darlings to an inexpensive breakfast as they trickle into town on the way to their gigs at the nearby MP's around 7:30 to 8:00 am. later, when you stroll into the tico MP, with a copy of La Nacion tucked under your arm and a bag of tangerines, they will recognize you and give you the closest thing to a GFE for a low rent tico MP. tip - hand out the tangerines and leave the copy of La Nacion for the little darlings to read. |

yeah.....I've seen a lot of people eating in Central Mercado. I'm sure it's cheap, and the natives really like it......but that tico food just doesn't do it for me. |

Go out the side door of the Morazan and into the building next door where the bank and Pharmacy are and eat at the little restaurant. Very cheap and good. The owner speaks english.Enjoy |

there is a neat, clean little place diagonally accross from the Hotel Rex.. it's the 2nd Nica restaurant in from Avenida 7 on the west side of the street accross from a copy center excellent fluffy scrambled eggs sweet waitress named Marjorie |

There is a restaurant on the rotunda de Plaza Viquez (it is actually a rectangular shaped round-about and not a round rotunda). I don’t know the name of the soda but it is supposed to be a favorite of many locals. It is an open face café located on Avenue 18, between Calle 9 and 11. If you know the area, as you go south on Calle 9, this unnamed street veers off to the left from Calle 9. It is the diagonal street that the busses and most traffic takes to the left as you go by Pantera Rosa. Any way the soda is between that street and Calle 11. Has anyone been there? If yes, is it a good place for breakfast? |

The real Soda Peru, not Delicias (sp?) del Peru, but the one between the parliament building and Mas X Menos had a very cheap breakfast years ago. When I was first in CR over 10 years ago I often stopped in there on the way to town from Barrio California. The last time I was in there was later in the day and it was full of drunks guzzling cheap beer listening to a televangelist. Go figure. |
