I am going to San Jose for 2 days next month. Last time I went I think I got a little sick, I was still able to do my thing, but I felt really run down most of the time. I am going to be staying at Hotel M, I was wandering where would be the best place to eat? Should I stay away from certain foods? Is it safe to drink the beer that is made in costa rica? |

The Gardens is adjacent to Hotel Castillo. Sportsmen's Lodge is one block East. Cafe Mundo, a couple of blocks further. Hotel Don Carlos is kitty-corner from Hemingway Hotel (Next door to Gardens) Soda Amon is one block west, one block south (closes at 4 or 5) All of this & I've not left the neighborhood! I've eaten at all of them more than once & never had a health "issue". CRT VIP discount at Castillo, Gardens & Sportsmen's, but then evidently budget is not a concern since you are not a VIP. (poke-poke ![]() This being said, I personally enjoy dining at the "Y" while I'm in S.J.! ![]() |

Post subject: | Peru resturaunt |
I'm not sure if it still exists. two years ago we went to a place called "Sodas Peru" just up from the Zone Blue (?). They don't speak English buy DAMN the food was good. They guy takes fresh Sea Bass and batters it in a corn/buttermilk batter. Huge pieces of fish with rice and beans.. You leave the place filled up but it's like enegy food. You'll walk it off and be hungry again in 30 minutes. I wish they'd open up a new location. Absolutely one of the best resturaunts I've been to. I wish they had places like this in the states...... Maybe others will tell you to go to the tourist trap places but we ate at this place so much that the owners got sick of us (I admit it Americans can be annoying in these countries) |

The Spoon, near Mall San Pedro, does have good food. It is a short, 2-3 block walk. |

If that was meant to be sarcastic or humorous you should have included an emoticon. |

Pierre6242483 There are two primary beers brewed in Costa Rica: Imperial and Pilsen. They also brew a darker beer called Bavaria. I am not a connoisseur of beer but I like to drink my fair share. Heck, I like to drink your share too. Seriously, Imperial, Pilsen and Bavaria are good beers. If anything were wrong with Imperial, I would have died years ago because I have consumed a lot of it. For reference to American beers, when in the States I drink Budweiser and MGD. |

Try Dos Gringos, right down from the DR, it's good, cheap and hot girls work there. Also, try the Resto at the Balmoral, the chicken and rice (I forget what its called) is very good. Tin Jo is very good for Asian cusine. SL good pub food. |

No offense, but I'd be remiss if I did not mention I had the worst meal of my life at Dos Gringos last year. Assuming it has not been newly managed in the past year, I'd avoid it. (I had enchiladas - the cheese looked like cheese wiz and tasted equally pedestrian.) Yeah, the one waitress was hot, though. Tin Jo is alright but it ain't cheap. For breakfast I like a little place on the main avenue (walking avenue, I always forget if it's Avenida Central or 1) - it's way up past the Banco de Costa Rica on the left, just past the store on the left with the big 3D wave on its front. Has a little outdoor seating area but I always sit indoors to avoid the street vendors. Breakfast there is nothing special but decent and cheap, decent service, etc.. I'm actually looking for a GOOD cheap place for breakfast, think I'll start a new thread. |

DC agrees with D1 on Dos Gringo. The owner is a good guy. You'll like the place if you like casual. Sorry you had a bad experience Miguel Blanco. I liked the chow and the drinks were good and strong. |

It sounds like you are describing Manolo's but that is before you get to the big BCR building. The bank is green marble but interesting enough called banco negro by Ticos. ![]() |
