I don't know if this Italian restaurant has been reviewed here before, but after last night it has become one of my favorites here in SJ. I went with a friend of mine, and we had an antipasti, followed by some stuffed mushrooms and for a main course we had an offshoot of a veal and eggplant parmisian served with fresh vegetables. . UNBELIEVABLY GOOD. It's rare that you can find veal in any restaurant here in CR.This was great. A CRT member told my it was a little pricey BUT the veal dish was 5400 colones which if memory serves me correctly is about what the chicken parmisan costs these days at Costa Del Sol. The restaurant is no more that a 10 minute taxi ride from the Gulch. open Monday through Saturday from noon to 2 pm and from 6 to 10 pm. 2253-6239 2225-0543 directions: From KFC San Pedro 200m south.. on the right side......Casa Italia Building,San Jose |

I disagree. It's called 'carne de ternera', and it's freakin everywhere. |

I had dinner there for the second time last night. It was just as good, if not even better the second time. A friend and I shared some stuffed mushrooms and a shrimp scampi appetiser. He then had the spinich and cheeses raviolis and I had the veal marsala. With a drink and extra tip the bill was 15,000 col each. The veal, for example, was 5600 col. Great restaurant, which is 5-10 minutes taxi ride from the Gulch. |

It is a block west of the Arena surf shop, 1/2 block south of the main drag if memory serves. I will get better directions when I return. |

Il Ritorno is great. Tony the owner used to own Ponteveccio (spelling?) and had some tax issues in CR and sold to some idiot who ruined the restuarant (still in business however). Tony opened up a restaurant in Normal, Illinois for 3-4 years, and then went back to CR once his tax issues went away. (Il Retorno--The Return) He made 1 phone call and his old waiters and bartender left Potiveccio, and moved to his restaurant. Tony can cook. Vegas Bob, try the Veal Limone. Fantastic--and lemon sauce mixed with the veggies tastes great. I know some CRT brother complained that he showed up around 6:00 and the place was empty, yet he was still asked if he had a reservation. I guarantee you by the time he left the place was packed. They are always busy. Tony, and the 2 waiters all speak good english. The taller Waiter Charlie is a better waiter than the other one. If you like sambucca, ask if they have Molinari. All Italians know that Molinari is the best. I'm surprised most US Italian restaurants don't carry it. |

PAC55 & VEGAS BOB: Thanks for your directions to that French restaurant. I found it and it was terrific. It is called Lile de France inside the Hotel Bergerac. If you are going from San Pedro Mall toward downtown, go one light past the Auto Mercado and turn left. There is an offset left turn lane. Go one half block south (down the hill) and it is on the left. I had sea bass that was incredibly good; coupled with a great bottle of wine from Argentina. The ambience is very tropical; simple yet elegant. Superb service; great experience! I highly recommend it. The owner Tomas speaks English very well. |
