Seafood Restaurant Ordered Closed After Customers Became Sick
The Ministerio de Salud (Health ministry) announced yesterday that more than a 100 cases of food poising have been reported by customers of the Princesa Marina in La Guaria de Moravia, falling ill between March 17 and yesterday. The announcement was made by the minister de Salud, Dr. María Luisa Ávila Agüero.

Salud officials say they found health violations at the restaurant that affected at least 12 people who had to be taken to hospital last Friday. The dozen customers received medical attention at the Calderón Guardia hospital.

The same day Salud officials ordered the restaurant closed.

Officials yesterday confiscated half the food in the seafood restaurant, that included shrimp, lobster, chicken, beef and beans - both cooked and uncooked. Health officials say the expect to confiscate the balance today.

"People got sick because they may have consumed contaminated food. Notwithstanding, the laboratory tests will determined the exact cause of the illness", said minister Avila, who confirmed that samples were already sent to the CCD laboratory in the United States.

The minister added that the restaurant was found to have a poor handling of food, among other health infractions.

I ate at the Princessa Marina location in Sabana the night of April 5, 2008. I happy as a lark that I did not get sick this trip. It is a good thing the Health Department decided to check it out after a hundred people went to the hospital!

You know, sometimes we comment on things muy tico or simple failings, but, they do take their restaurant sanitation seriously.I have eaten in all strata of restaurants in CR with never a thought for 'risk'.

As with any chain restaurant a problem in one does not necessarily spill over to the others. The qualification of and the hands on approach of the management at each location is the key to sanitation. The restaurant with the problem was not the one in Sabana.

I have lived here almost 5 years and have never had a problem at any restaurant from the most basic soda to the most high end dining establishment. Sanitation may appear to be hit and miss but it seems to work.

I used to like Princessa Marina but ate some bad shrimp there once and haven’t returned.
