I think I had read a review of this restaurnt some time ago here on CRT. Some friends recommended it recently so a friend and I tried it last night. This place is absolutely the best, most elegant restaurant I have ever dined in here in CR. You will be hardpressed to name a more beautifull setting anywhere in the States. The room was spectacular. The waiters wore tuxedos and the food was fantastic. I have to admit that since moving here to CR,I have almost forgotten the difference between dining and eating. This was dining. It is located in the hotel of the same name (no chicas in rooms) in Paseo Colon. I started with a black bean soup, then a nice salad with quails eggs and then pork medallians with a pepper sauce. My friend had the same but with duck as a main course. After a glass of wine the bill for two was 46,000 colones. That might be a bit expensive for San Jose but it was certainly worth every colone. For those of you with novias who know which fork to use..... spend the extra money and treat the two of you. Bu the way...did I mention that the setting was truly elegant.

You must have felt a little out of place if the place was so elegant as you usually are one of the worst dressed gringos in town.

A ratty faded old tee shirt, with baggy ill fitting jeans and white running shoes.

OK so today is "take a shot at VB day" No problem. Sorry if my mode of dress offends you but I really think it is more the norm in CR than anything else. Actually I was afraid that the other diners would be dressed better, but they really weren't. Thanks for taking the time to be so kind.

Last fall, I met a couple on the flight down. She was a Tica who lived in NYC for 14 years - he was from Germany. They were getting married and were moving down to CR. (Not that any of this matters.)

They invited me to dinner and suggested this restaurant. I ended up walking there from the Pres. I had no idea how nice it was, and I showed up in cargo shorts and a somewhat casual shirt and sandals. They were well-dressed, but there was a mix of all types there.

We had a great meal with two appetizers, a bottle of wine, and desserts. The bill was about $100.

Just a VB describes, the place was extremely nice - as nice as any restaurant I have been to in the USA, and the prices were very reasonable. The food was very good, and the service was on par with what you would expect in the USA.

It was dark when I left the restaurant, and I got turned around. I was planning to walk up to Paseo Colon, but instead I accidentally headed south and found myself in a very seedy neighborhood. I spent an uncomfortable 15 minutes or so trying to catch a cab.

It is a very nice establishment in a not-so-nice part of town, but I would recemmond it.

Vb Take it easy, learn to laugh at yourself. Don't take yourself so seriously. I just could not resist .

But seriously look at yourself in the mirror before you go out next time and you will see I am right.

Some members claim you are missing out on the finest colombianas as we all know they only go with best dressed and groomed gringos. That plus a cien.

Are you sure you were at the Hotel Gran de Oro? It is in a area that is mix of commercial and residential. Being on the corner of Ave 4 you could only walk 3 blocks south before you would dead end at the cemetery on avenida 10. Should be plenty of taxis on that street. You would have to go a lot further south to reach the not so nice area of barrio Cuba or some blocks east before you get to the not so nice area around the Pirates Club

Yes. I'm positive. The hotel had a big stairway leading up the the entrance with a little gift shop on the right. The restaurant entrance was to the left as you walked through the front doors.

At the dead end - I think two blocks south, there was a fenced-in area full of trash, debris, rubbish, etc. It was about 9:00 at night. There were some guys sleeping on the sidewalk about 1/2 block to the east. There was a little restaurant and/or bar on the NE corner with a guard standing out front, but that didn't make me feel any more secure. Lots of taxis passed by, but most of them already had passengers.

I could be recalling it worse than it really was, standing there in shorts in the dark and not knowing for sure where I was and a few glasses of wine in me. I had forgotten my trusty GR map, so I was at a loss.

Finally when I did get a taxi, he didn't speak any English (or pretended well), and I had to ask him to start the meter after a few blocks. He was obviously planning to scam me, so I got away with a couple of blocks for free.

Hey Bob,
Thanks for the good review, I was looking for a nice new place to take my novia de la semena. By the way, I'm coming to town tonight. As always, hope to catch up with you, and you can wear whatever the hell you want.

Zman,
Just curious ..... Why do you have a hard-on for VB ??? He's helped countless members of this board, and he's always had good, concise info on the scene in CR. Why the animosity?

All of this posted without a single emoticon to signify a remark made in jest makes it difficult to buy into your statement that you are just teasing.

To me a single post with the appropriate emoticon indicates a little "leg pulling". Multiple post in the same thread with the same theme gets a little closer to being a vendetta.

Greengo....nice to see you back in poetic form.I was beginning to question my sanity because I was starting to understand your posts. lol I'd tell you to say "hello" to Ben for me,but fortunately I've never met him in the Biblical sense. How would you compare the meat of a hamburger in Panama City to the flesh of a clean shaven backside of Ben?
