Last night Easy,LV Steve,Prolillo and two non-CRT friends of mine had dinner at the restaurant Bakkea. The restaurant is conveniently located about a block up from The Clarion towards the Zoo. It was my second time there and it was really great. They even gave the 6 of us a small private room in which to dine.Everyone agreed that this is a special place with great food, service and atmosphere. It's a place to take that "special" chica or just friends. Depending on what you order it can be a little more pricy than most other places in town. I personally recommend the rissoto with three mushrooms and the rack of New Zealand lamb for main courses. WOW are they good. |

Yeah, I've got to agree with VB. It's a real nice restaurant, and the food is top quality. The last time we ate there, it was raining so we took a taxi from the SL, but when we were done, the rain had stopped and we walked a few blocks - back to the SL. It's not a bad walk, but I wouldn't recommend doing it alone at night. VB, If memory serves, you had the lamb last time we were there also! I guess this answers LVSteve's question about restaurants in SJO that serve lamb! I had a chicken dish, and it was also fantastic! Definitely 2 thumbs up! Bakea is a little pricey, but IMO the quality of the food (and atmosphere) makes up for it. Try it with your favorita. It might be a little fancier than she's used to, but regardless, you'll still probably get laid afterwards! ![]() Good report VB. MG ![]() |

I was there on a trip last november, we were the only people in the restaurant when we arrived, but by the time we left there were a few other tables full and we had a private room as well. there are many rooms with only a few tables in each. we had 2 different pizzas for appetizers and i had some kind of seafood pasta with tantacles in it. also had the house specialty desert which i highly reccomend "cahuita y caramelo" which chocolate-banana tart with a molten chocolate center and macadamia pieces thrown in. my only complaint is that i went for the desert and i ordered it actually before i ordered even my appetizers as it takes 25 minutes to prepare. they apparently "forgot" and when it was time for the bill i asked about the desert and had to wait 25 minutes longer to get it. all in all a good meal. they specialize in french dining. |

I've read the menu and read revues, though I haven't eaten there (I didn't have the cash on hand when I walked in so we went to JR Ribs). It was high for CR but seemed in line for a better restaurant. The AMCostaRica restaurant critic felt that it was a very good deal for the quality and the folks leaving when I visited loved it. I figured that if I ran into another gourmand who might be into spending as much for a fine dinner sometime as a trip to NF I'd go, since it's right around the corner from Hotel Castillo. Some day I'll drop in when I make it back down, hopefully soon. |

My Son & I ate there Super Bowl weekend and were the only people in there about 9:00pm.IMHO the best meal I have had in CR. If memory serves we had Salads , entries, desserts, and several drinks & the tab was slightly north of $100 |

The lamb is the most expensive thing on the menu at 12,000 colones (but certainly worth it in my mind). All other entrees are in the 6-9000 range. Except for the lamb,I would expect to have a great dinner with a bottle of reasonably priced wine for $60-70 for a couple of people. (sharing a bottle of wine) The price for two people is around the same as a mid-range chica who probably won't be as conssistantly good as the dinner. In CR we consider that a high-end restaurant, but in the States that price is a small step up from Mac Donalds. As Orange correctly said,it's all relative. I've eaten there 3 times so far and it's still my favorite place in all of CR. |

I ate at Bakkea with a friend who has lived here in CR for 12 years. We both agreed that it is still the best dining experience in CR. If you like lamb chops as I do,theirs are imported from New Zealand and I've never had any better........ and for you Gultch rats,it's only a 10 minute walk from the DR. |
