Terminator,

Scuba,Smoothwind,El C, Don Papi and myself gave Don Wang's a try in May. The consensus was the food was much better than their next door competition Tin Jo.

Pricing is a a little higher than TJ, but overall food quality was well worth the price. They also offer Dim Sum in the evenings.

Post subject:  Don Wang - Thumbs Up!

I ate at Don Wang's for the first time over my Memorial Day visit this year. I highly recommend this place for a variety of reasons, not the least of which is the level of service we received, which is a good deal better than any other place at which I've eaten in San Jose.

Prices are quite high for Costa Rica, but the cost:value ratio is very high. We didn't try dim sum, but their dim sum menu runs four pages! My chicken curry was in a word, spectacular, as were the egg rolls I tried. I may not ever eat at Tinjo again.

BTW, thanks to Scubabum, Don Papi, Smooth Wind and Hola B. for helping me read the menu, etc.. :)
On the Ciego Scale of one (lousy) to five (Nirvana) stars, Don Wang gets four stars.

It is good. The place up the hill (same street as the Press, but up the hill), Wongs, is more traditiona and better, an far cheaper. Not bad Dim Sum either.

I went to this restaurant. I ordered too much and had to doggie bag it. I had some chow fun and some dim sum. The Dim Sum wasn't that great compared to American Chinatown standards. The price was okay, I think I paid 12-14 dollars. I didn't go to Tin Jo's, because I heard it was expensive.

I never had much success finding good Chinese food in San Jose, and to make matters worse, soy sauce seems to be a rarity. It just doesn't compare to the Chinese food we're used to getting in the U.S. [YMMV].

The best fried rice I've come across in San Jose was at the YUD FAD Chinese pollo restaurant [walking down Central Avenida from the Del Rey end, turn right at Wendy's and go about 3 or 4 blocks]. The fried rice was good, similar to U.S. standards, but when I asked for soy sauce, the cute little China Doll that waited on me, handed me some sort of red hot sauce. :? :(

There's a pretty good Chinese place in the Mall San Pedro, in their food court. Price was good, quantity was good, and taste was very good. Can't remember the name though. I'm sure someone will chime in here with the name of this restaurant.

Have no clue why the restaurants do not have soy sauce. You can buy it in every super mercado in San Jose. Couple of different brands including the same La Choy that you buy in the US.

Strange :? ......I think the Chinese restaurants are really lacking without it.

If you want soy sauce, ask for "salsa china"

"Salsa China.".......Could be the answer to it. I do recall getting soy sauce at the JO JO Chinese Restaurant across the street from the Holiday Inn. The food wasn't too bad....I was the only one in the restaurant [not a good sign]. :? They did indeed give me soy sauce, but from what I remember, it had the consistency of wet mud. :?
