Tuesday nite ventured up the mountain with a group of gringo "locals' to
to DONDE ALCIDES or as DonGordo calls it Porkchop hill....

What a SURPRISE.... the place has gone BIG TIME...

no more little shack on side of the road that looks like it's ready to slide to the bottom at any time...
no more wooden benches, open air tables, dust blowing in from passing traffic.. even have real banos with running water..!!

A new enclosed building with real tables (many) and a second floor dining area,
grill now in front and windows along wall for view of valley....

GOOD NEWS... the porkchops are the same..!!! 1 kilo of great chops for 5500 colons ivi....
had a large plate and BOTH chops covered entire plate.... no one was able to finish... 4 doggie bags to San jose...

Great Place.. little far to go but well worth the trip...

In Tarbaca Aserri about 3-4 Km past Ram Luna on right side.....

It is good to see that one of my "out of the way" recommendations is a big hit. I have been going to Porkchop Hill for many years and it never disappoints me . The quality AND the price for these incredible porkchops is amazing.
Pidd...did you bring your own apple sauce again??????

Since it was my Novia's little sister's birthday, I took the "Family" there for Sunday lunch yesterday. Outstanding! Whole thing only cost me 17,000 colones and we took enough home to feed them that night too.
What a country!

That’s good to hear. I stumbled upon Donde Alcides a couple of years ago. I was trying to go to Mirador Ram Luna on a Monday evening but they were closed, and the taxi driver recommended Donde Alcides. I almost didn’t go in because it looked like such a dump. I didn’t realize at the time that it was THE “Pork Chop Hill.” I decided to try it and the chops were great and the quantity was unbelievable.

It’s good to hear that they have made it more attractive. I’m sure they will do well. I’m looking forward to trying it again in about 3 weeks.

The last time I went up there with my favorita and asked the taxi driver to wait, it cost me $40 cab fare. This trip is best made with a group sharing a taxi.

I take the circumvencion to the Desampardos exit. Follow the road to Asseri and continue up the mountain past Ram Luna until you start to descend toward Tarbacca and it will be on the right.

From Escazu there is a shorter way going through Alejuelita then to Asseri but I am not sure of the directions.

You know, CR has never been known for it's beef, but I've never had a bad porkchop in CR. A tico buddy told me that their pork is world class because the country is awash in exotic fruit. The day that it gets too old for sale for human consumption the mercados send to the pigs. Porkers that eat mango, banana, papaypa etc all benefit in the tasty scale. I'd have to agree.
