El Observatorio – Music and drinks with eats bar.
Barrio California frente al Cine Magaly 223-0725
This is a fairly new place, sorta Jazz Café – like, it is in my stomping grounds. Taxis know Cine Magaly, about a ten minute walk Uphill – east of Del Rey. About the same in a cab because of the one way streets -gets you out of the gulch a little. It is across the street from the front door of the cinema.
Like I said it is pretty new I have watched ‘em working on for about a year. Obviously remodeled and decorated by the “queer eyes for the straight guys†or however that goes it is pretty comfortable with the cleaned bricks and all. The art is tasteful and lots of TV’s have more art when not showing the entertainment on the stage - no programs or sports. The music I’ve heard has ranged from jam session to incredible, good sound system. Not a dance place-more of a listen to music and drink and eat.
Nice menu and I’ve eaten there 4 times and not had anything less than good. Nachos, Ceveche, sopa marisco and a sausage hot dog to die for with pesto they call choripan all good. Imperial 800 colones; drinks about 1.300 and hot dog to die for 1,200.
There is an ‘inside and and an outside’, service depends of course on how busy they are. I am the only Gringo I have ever seen there, bathrooms are spotless. Clients are young yupey Ticos and groups of Ticas that I have seen. Sometimes I have wished I wasn’t with my significant other judging from smiles I’ve gotten back…
Opens at 6 PM music starts 9-10PM. Go early for good seats, buzz and dinner. When it gets crowded service is sporadic.
If you check it out I’d be interested to hear your take on it. I like it, one of my hangouts.
