my nomination is the hole in the wall cafe/tienda next to the MP Pensiones on Avenida 5 and Calle 6. I seem to remember 25 cent glasses of coffee and being unable to eat more than $2 worth of food. In the early morning hours, one may share breakfast with the working class residents and farmers in town to hawk their wares at the nearby market area. even a few little darlings may be encountered while they drop drop in for a quick bite on their way to work at the numerous nearby MP's. The crowded cook area, the dirt, the sense of an impending explosion from the ancient propane grill, the view of the unwashed masses. ohhh, the ambiance. I live for this stuff. c'mon guys, i know you've seen worse. at least this joint doesn't have a dirt floor. |

Soda Peru 100 M W of the Parliament was really cheap the last time I was there. I used to get Gallo Pinto with an egg and tea for 200c. Of course this wasn't last week and the colon was worth a lot more, but it is probably still very cheap. Try Los Condes on Av 11. I've never been there for breakfast but the rest of the day it is cheap and a bit nasty. |

Wow, this thread is almost as fascinating as the "Which establishment in SJ has the dirtiest bathrooms" some time back. ![]() |

Post subject: | Soda Peru -- not Delicias del Peru!! (sp?) |
The place I mentioned is next to the Parliament. It has cheap food, drunks and, if the last time I was in there indicates anything, TV preachers on the tube. I used to have breakfast there around 10 years ago, but I've been in it within the last 3. That is why I keep posting things when people call the place up the street from ZB Soda Peru. That isn't the right name and there was already a place that is called that on the sign in front. There are actually several Peruvian Restaurants in town, some of which are quite nice. I don't know about the fish place a stop before the Mercado Mayario (sp?) on the Sabana Cementario bus these days, but it was nice. (Be careful cracking the crabs -- I've cut my hand doing it twice. Bring some sort of cracker tool. I used to travel with small vise grips, which would do fine.) I've heard good things about Machu Pichu and there used to be a Russo-Peruvian restaurant with a very attractive cook from Moscow. Sadly, it's now closed. Anticuchos and Stroganoff on the same menu! Sorry for rambling. I guess that's what they talk about drunken driving on the information superhighway. |

I have a winner. It has to be the place next to Bar Poas where I contracted Salmonella last Friday. I figured I was in trouble when I ordered the omelet and then noticed the Nica with the big butt out back chasing the chicken. The only resaon I stayed was because she let me "choke the chicken" while she gathered the eggs. Actually it wasn't that cheap 'cause I spent $25.00 at the Farmacia. On the other hand they saved me a couple hundred on my bar bill and P4P 'cause I was either in bed or the bathroom for 48 hours. This is a true story. Except the part about the chicken. |
