Post subject:  JRs Ribs
Stayed the Hotel Castillo my second trip last night June 03, 2006. I had the munchies for something close to Texas. I got pretty damn close to it at JRs Ribs. It was late, raining, and I was not planning on getting lucky. I had been successful 3 times so far on this rip with chicas. I was told by the front desk it was 4 blocks down 2 blocks over. In Houston I would have just popped in a clip and made the walk. Barrio Amon. Not sure yet. Being the wise one I took a cab the short distance to JRs. I was not planning on dining in. I needed to get back to the nest just in case some tica was caught in the web. I placed my order for thr ribs with young male waiter. What? No potatoe salad? You are killing me. Waited about 25 minutes inside with taxi running outside in the rain. Made it back to the room. Damn those ribs were so frea___g delicious I seemed to forget about the missing potatoe salad! I recomend highly JRs Ribs on your next visit to CR.
All they need is the salad and a few Ticas hanging out and they will be the place to be.

I do not think walking around Barrio Amon in the daytime is to bad I have walked form the prez, to, ZB, NF, SL, and then to the HDR, with out a problem. I would not try this at night!


I have JR`s on my list of place’s to try this trip. I looked it up on the map
And from the SL it does not look easy to get to. The zoo is in the way and all the streets end at the zoo.

If any one has good directions, it would be appreciated

Think the easiest directions are as you come out of the Amon Plaza hotel go left (east). Walk about 2 blocks until the street dead ends. Turn Right (south) JR's is about 25 meters straight ahead.

Stop talking about these damn ribs!! haha Man, Ive got a craving but have got to go back to Jaco today. Thanks for the good directions, will definitely try them next week when I come back.

Jr's was a regular stop for me last trip. Always walked from the SL. Great ribs!! Located just behind the zoo.

Those are good directions coming from the Amon. But like you said that is the easy way to go. Coming from the SL it might get a bit more complicated.

Some one said you can access them from the back by going out the back of the SL to Calle 11 and into JR's from the back.

I'm not so sure that can be done as I haven't tried it myself.

If you can't, what Gino said about dead end streets and not getting past the zoo sounds pretty much like my understanding too. Unless you want to hop a fence and maybe wind up in the lion cage, in which case that cat might be having human ribs for dinner. If you're not into discovering shortcuts or risking mauling, from the SL you have to take the long way around to cover the relatively short distance as the quetzal flies.

From the SL take a right and head down to Avenida 9 and take another right. Forget about turning on Calle 11 as that will just take you back to where you started. Continue past Castillo and Hemingways. Forget about Calle 9 - another dead end. Continue past Don Carlos and NF. NOW YOU CAN take another right. Take your 1st right on Avenida 11 (the street Amon is on) your 1st right after that (after the bend) and JR's will be at the end on the right. What's that? 6 rights. You got that right. Right out the SL, right at the corner, right after NF, next right, next right and JR's on the right. RIIIGGGHHHTTT!

Good luck. BTW, I'd walk that at dinner time since that area is largely deserted but I'd walk fast.

I understand the long way. I have walked most of the streets you are talking about and I will have your map with me. :?

My girl and I love the place Its a five block walk from our condo behind the holiday Inn. We walk it all the time just be nice to the TV's and say "maybe later" and they are mostly all nice too One went with us for dinner one night different and yet very nice

Any Crt who wants to join us or want us to go with them pm me later

There is not a back way from the SL to JR`s ribs it is not a bad walk four or five blocks but the hill in front of NF is invalid on the way back.

It is not a bad place to eat I would go again. But not the best ribs I have ever had ether

Folks,

Last Wednesday on my last night in CR I visited JR's Ribs. From my perspective the decor was great and chica's would like it. The music was good too.

They served me a Margarita that was as good as most anywhere. However, I will say that the over all culinary experience was average to 'good'. It was not however the gastronomic pinnacle of my trip. The 'full rack of baby back ribs' was full length, but the ribs were cut into finger length pieces. (I guess that the remainers was sold to the American 'riblet' industry:) The ribs were moist, but they were heated up on premises and obviously not slow cooked there. The barbeque sauce was OK, but a bit sweet. (I tend to believe that the gourmet peak of ribdom includes Memphis dry rub ribs and North Carolina Vinegar based sauces. However, we all have our legitimate regional preferences.)

The corn on the cob was frozen and heated, served on sticks it was warm but not hot.

The service was good.

Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed my meal but as a real pork Barbeque aficionado, the experience was good overall, but not exceptional in any way. I think that the right sauce on a nicely cooked chuleta a la plancha would easily top it.

I walked back to Castillo that night after dinner. It was raining, I had a big umbrella and didn't think any bad folks would be lounging on the streets that evening.

I like eating the ribs at JR's......but I'll say it again, I also like the offerings at Hamburguesa Factory on Central Avenida, just down the hill from the New York Bar. Besides ribs, they also have barbecue chicken and a thin steak served with fried onions, and of course, hamburgers. It's convenient.........and also.........lots of cute Ticas working there :) .
