I’m back you I know you have all waited breathlessly for my return to Costa Rica so I can give you some obscure review nobody will ever go to. Well if you miss out on Café Mangiamo then you are missing out on a hidden gem in Costa Rica. First off it’s in Santa Ana halfway between Escazu & the Marriott in San Antonio Belen where I picked up G-Man and his lady of course the ball and chain was riding shotgun I really hate that bitch.

This place was recommended to Gmans by Bill & Karina at the Sportsmen’s and since it was very close to my home and to where they were staying it was the perfect choice. Arrived to find there are actually two restaurants here. Both the same décor which if described its ultra modern art deco type, with the blue lights a full very sophisticated looking bar in both places with both indoor and outdoor seating under cover outside.

The right side of the restaurant is all various Gourmet pizzas, salads and Italian style Panini sandwiches. We chose the full menu side which was your standard soup to nuts Italian choices. Menu consisted of Antipastos of various choices, salads, soups and Risotto. Entries ranged from 7 chicken choices, 7 fish choices, 4 veal choices, 4 steak choices and about 1 dozen pastas all homemade on premise with various sauces. Appetizers ranged from 3 to 6 dollars all large enough for two. Pollo, carnes & pastas from 6 to 14 dollars again very large portions.

Wine list was extremely well balanced and VERY AND I MEAN Very reasonable.

Ordered way too much food the Mozzarella Corrozza appetizer fried cheese with breadcrumb stuffed with prosucutto was excellent covered in a fresh marinara sauce. Also ordered an excellent Cesar salad which could serve all four of us, but we shared all the appetizers and everyone was pleased.

For dinner I have yet to find good VEAL in Costa Rica but this place really gave me a good vibe. Well I hit here as it was the best Veal I have had in this country. I had it Marsala with fresh mushrooms with a not to heavy sauce that truly was fantastic. The ball and chain had a wonderful stuffed chicken with Spinach, roasted peppers, mozzarella and prosutto covered in a pink sauce that also was absolutely fantastic. G-man ordered the carne with a demi glaze green peppercorn sauce that was to die for. His lady ordered the pasta fruta di mare which consisted of a various types of shellfish in a white wine garlic sauce with linguine. Again a great dish. At this point we were truly stuffed. Complimentary good garlic bread with fresh arrabiata dipping sauce was provided throughout the meal.

Two bottles of Pino Grigio Santa Margarthia 32.00 each (VERY GOOD PRICE) with 2 bottles of Water sin gas along with 4 espressos were also consumed.

With tax & Added tip waitress was great Bill came to $140.00 which in my opinion for the type of service, food quality consumed, and ambiance was really a terrific value.

So if you’re in this area Give Café Mangiamo a try it was outstanding. Owner stopped by and gave us a card for 10% off our entire meal next time in town.
