The current issue of Wine Spectator contains their annual Dining Guide featuring restaurants which promote wine with a passion. While Costa Rica does not have a winner Panama City, Panama has a Best Award of Excellence going to the Chalet Suisse. It is stated to have 750 types of wine available for customers. The menu prices are listed at $ 11 - 32. Food is French/Swiss. It is on Calle Eusebio A. Morales El Cangrego. (507) 263-8541. You lucky dogs in Tampa have Bern's Steakhouse with 2,500 wines to select and a cellar of half a million bottles. |

This place is also called "1985 Room". Its a bit pricey, but if you are up for gormet dining with the aforementioned huge wine list...this is a great place. FYI...the owner also owns the Italian restaurant and "Wine Bar" just down the street at the Las Vegas Suites Hotel. One of my favorite Italian places. Here is a review on 1985 I found that might be valuable before you go there... Quote: 1985 / Rincon Suizo. The only true 5-star dining in Panama. They also have the largest wine cellar in Panama. A sure bet. I must warn you though, this place is not for the thrifty traveler. For those concerned about price try Pomodoro owned and operated by the same Master Chef. They serve a lot of the same dishes without all the 5 star frills Best dining in Panama. They will make you feel like you are a regular on your first visit. Truly a great dining experience.
Begin your meal with an order of Raqylette for two to tantalize your tastebuds. For the main course I recommend the Medallones Morilles. This dish is not on the menu but will not dissapoint I promise. The owner Willy Diggleman prepared this for me one time and I ordered it every time I visited from then on. It consists of Pork Medalions covered in a creamy sauce accented by delctable Morrel Mushrooms |

Tman, regarding the above restaurant at Las Vegas Suites Hotel, approx. how much should I expect to spend for an average dinner for 2, before wine and booze ? |

Average entree I order there is between $6-9. Decent bottle of wine for around $18. On the average I find food and beverages in fine dining spots about 25-30% lower than Costa Rica...significantly more from US prices obviously. I heartily reommend the Pomodoro or Wine Bar for Italian, great cheese selection and wines. Plus they have quality live entertainment most nights in the Wine Bar. Anything from jazz to latin Boleros. |

The best place for wine that I have found in CR is Tintos and Blancos in Terramall. Over 50 wines available by the glass. They also have a wine cellar with many good wines not available elsewhere. The food is varied with many tapa type dishes . Entertainment on weekends mostly trova and jazz. Attracts an upper middle class Tico crowd with lots of eye candy. |

Panama in general has the best wine selection in Central America. IIRC, their import duties are lower than anyone else's. I remember a few years ago the Mottas were virtually giving away wine fridges. |
