On my third trip to San Jose, I had my third great meal at the
Balcon de Europa. This time I had rabbit a la Provencale, and it
was damn good: tasty rabbit, fresh pasta, great sauce with mushrooms,
vegies on the plate. This followed a wonderful cream of asparagus
soup and preceded a self-indulgent creme brule. GOOD FOOD, PILGRIM.
The only problem is that the only white wine you can get by the half-carafe
(for a single guy like me, a bottle is too much) is a fruity little
German-tasting wine that does not match up to the great food. The
house red was also lacking, on my last trip. Next
time I will just order a bottle of good Chilean and leave some in the
bottle on the table.
I paid $30 including tip and tax for a meal that would cost more than
double that in the Detroit suburbs, and I wouldn't even know where
to go for French cooking in Toledo. The wait staff are eager to please
and charmingly forget stuff, but the place is small so you can get
their attention.
