Met a friend for lunch in San Jose today. We walked over to the News Café and found it closed for some renovation.

We walked across the street to the Balmoral and had lunch there. The daily special is very good deal.

You have a choice of four entrées. Today was Pork Chop, Chicken, Fish or Pasta. We both had the pork chop (chuleta). The lunch consisted of soup, basket of bread, beverage, entrée and flan for dessert. Total cost tax and tip included 2900 colones each.

The pork chop was large and tasty and came with rice, cole slaw like salad and vegetable.

Food was good, service excellent, price is right. Would recommend it.

This may be moot as the News Cafe was supposed to open this afternoon and although it didn't, it looks like it will tomorrow, but just in case it stays closed until the World Cup-

The Skybox lounge on the Presidente's second floor is open for lunch with a limited "News Cafe" menu. It was packed today.

Glad to hear that the News Café appears very close to reopening. However eating in the same restaurant everyday can get boring so for those in town for an extended period the Balmoral offers a nice alternative.

If they open today can someone post a revue? What was renovated, does it make the place better, is the rail still there?

New Bar, same location, nice wood finsh, little higher than before. New counter at the kitchen also. Same chairs, table's at the rail the same.
New procedure for ordering your breakfast eggs, you tell the waiter, and then it shows up, no more pick up. I did not see the chica that cooked the eggs right out in front. Looks like they have more tables in front of the lower level bath rooms.

The food was OK, the prices were decent for a hotel and they had some great drink deals several years ago, but very little business. The asparagus soup was nice. A former favorita wanted to meet me there but stood me up, so that didn't help my feelings of the place. In that neighborhood there are so many places I liked better, I doubt that I've eaten there more than 3 times over the years. I've probably eaten 20 times at Club 1930 and many more at several other places in the area.

The food was OK but they tried to overcharge me for casadas.
Said the price with 2,000 extra for fish.

I wouldn't pay it and they adjusted the bill

Yep, the Balmoral still cannot get it's act together. I quit eating there three years ago. Funny thing, the bartender always thought my bud "CRdreamin" looked so much like Clint Eastwood....shit, never did help to get a good meal.

That hotel restaurant lacks in service and food quality....not to mention they pad the bill if you do not check it. At least my experience.
