For those guys who like to order chicken in your favorite CR restaurants, it looks like the price of chicken has almost doubled, overnight! This will, no doubt, filter down to pricing in restaurants throughout the area.

Sharp Increase In The Price of Chicken
Inside Costa Rica:

Shoppers yesterday got a shocking surprise and there was no foul play involved: the price of a kilo of chicken breast went from ¢750 colones to ¢1.440 colones, a ¢690 colones increase.

Only the chicken breast product saw the sharp increase, while the thigh, wings and other products saw increases of between ¢10 and ¢40 colones per kilo.

The main reason for the sharp increase for the breast is due that the main chicken provider has had the meat on sale and was not affected by the prices increases during the promotion.

La Corporación Pipasa S.A., said that the increase is due to the rising cost of gasoline fuel. Pipasa also said that their clients (wholesale buyers) had been given notice of the increase but it wasn't until yesterday that the increase was felt at the retail level.

Francisco Arias, manager of communications at Pipasa, explained the constant increases in the production and distribution process, mainly the higher cost of electricity, packing material and gasoline, forced the main producer of poultry products in the country to raise its prices.

Arias added that there hasn't been an increase in the price of poultry products since November of 2005.

Pipasa is part of the Rica Foods, whose principal activities are to produce and sell fresh and frozen poultry, processed chicken products, commercial eggs and concentrate for livestock and domestic animals production and distribution of animal feeds.

Rica foods also owns Corporacion As de Oros SA that operates 28 fried chicken quick service restaurants in Costa Rica called Restaurantes As and Don Amado.
