I usually stay in Gringo Gulch and I used to eat at the News Cafe for breakfast. Well, due to their no longer having the Egg Bar, I found their eggs to be less than satisfactory now, so it is not worth the price for me to eat there anymore.

I ate once at the place directly across from it, and I have seldom had worse service nor more boring breakfast.

Can anyone recommend a good place to eat around there? I am not really hard to please: I just like gallo pinto with my eggs scrambled well, maybe some salsa available for the eggs, good coffee, and it would be nice - though not necessary - if they had country fried potatoes on the menu and maybe fresh fruit drinks for a reasonable price. But I'm open to places that just have a good decent gallo pinto with scrambled eggs breakfast.

All suggestions will be considered and eventually I'll probably try all of them at least once.

You can get that breakfast at the Sportsmens. Just ask for those items. They have sausage and bacon as well. I have always enjoyed breakfast there and they serve the egg breakfast from about 8:00AM until the kitchen closes at 11:00PM.

The egg service I got at the PRez a few weeks ago was fine for me.

It might not meet your standards, but I thought the $2.99 steak and eggs at the Horseshoe Casino was worth the cost. Service is minimal, but it's a good shot of protein.

Please try the Colonial. Right next door to the HDR. I really like the food in the Colonial. They have a great breakfast and a very reasonable price. You can get plato tipico desayuno at the Colonial. They serve cafe Rey as the choice for coffee. Cafe Rey is my favorite of the Costa Rican coffees. You will look no further than the Colonial.

This advertisement brought to you by friends for the Colonial. :-) J/K. It is a good choice for any meal.

go to soda on the corner down from the Presidente, Chelles.

or, for some adventure, try eating at some of the sidewalk sodas on near calle 6 and avenida 5.

if you go ther around 8 am in the morning, you sometimes can eat breakfast with some of the little darlings working at the nearby MP's.

gallantly picking up the $1.50 tab for their breakfast and some complimentary chat goes a long, long way when you visit the MP's a half hour later as one of the first clients of the day.

Like Depanz1 said, the Colonial. It's really the only place in the gultch where you can get a good American breakfast for a resonable price.

Miguel, it is on the map but to zero in a little more for you it is on AVE 7 between Calle 7 and Calle 9. After breakfast you can proceed to New Fantasy or Zona Blue. Or if you are like me, BOTH

The main room at the Colonial restaurant is currently being remodeled or something. It has been closed for the last week. Workmen have been there every day. The only section that is open are the few tables closest to the bar.

I noticed that last time down in mid July. What exactly are they doing there, anyway?

Thanks, that helps a lot, I'll definitely go there; may not have time to go to ZB or NF that early in the day, but I'll definitely be hitting them both on my short trip.

What time do NF and ZB open, anyway? Are they really open "for dessert" after breakfast? (I always get there in the early to late evening, unfortunately that is the only time I can go.)

the MP's near calle 6 and avenida 5 open around 8:30 am.

not a lot of choices, but you have a shot at first service

in all honesty, there are some nice looking ones to be found.

and you can't beat 3500 colones for half hour
