When I am out of the country, I try to stick to american chains. I have a very iffy stomach so local cusine is out of the question.

What chains are in SJ?

KFC, Mcdonalds,Pizza hut, Hooters,The Outback.

However the local food is great ) and Rosti Pollos
is a good place to eat i think that it is a Costa rican chain. Back in the mid 80's i was kinda worried about where i ate when in CR. I have tried the Mcdonalds and PIzza Hut I got a 2 piece Mcpollo that was a breast and a wing ) cant get that in the states. Now when i go to CR i really enjoy eating at the local places THEY ARE GREAT i have never got sick from anyone of them yet. i suggest you try a few and just order something light.

Hello Jim Sloan,

I could be the delicate stomach poster boy, but I'll tell you...

Costa Rican food is a little on the bland side, and it presented no challenge whatsoever to my stomach.

Keep in mind that with few exceptions, American chains use locally available meats, fish and poultry. I read somewhere here on CRT that the Outback imports its beef, but I can't swear to it. My only experiment eating American chain fast food (Burger King) was horrible; I got very queasy after eating there. OTOH, I never got sick once from local cuisine.

The other side of this is, why would you miss out on a wonderful part of the travel experience by limiting yourself to eating only American chainstore food? From gallo pinto to carne al pastor to corvina (sea bass) to quesadilla con trucha ahumada (a pizza-like thing made with smoked trout), there are many wonderful things to eat in C.R. (besides the chicas, I mean).

Fruits unavailable in the U.S.: Mamon chino, guanabana, mandarinas, the best pineapple you'll ever eat... Batidos (fruit drinks made with milk)... the list of terrific local foods goes on and on!

Again, I do not have naything close to a cast-iron stomach (more like cast tinfoil!) If I can survive Costa Rican food without stomach upset, you can too.

:)

Purchase on your first day from a pharmacy a bottle of DIACORT..cost about $6. This stuff is GOOD. I had an upset stomach my third day and this stuff saved my ass.
Went back to my room, took a shot, lay down for a few hours and was back in action that evening. Also, the tips on other previous posts about sucking on limes with your meals and beer seemed to work as well.

You are a little in front of the curve amigo. There are no Wendy's in CR yet  but they supposedly will open their first store later this year. :D

There are also Subway, Quiznos, TGIF and Tony Roma's here at this time.

Note to Jim Sloan:

As has been pointed out here Costa Rican food is not highly spiced as is customary in many latin countries. The main fare is chicken, fish, pork served with rice and beans. Your stomach should handle it easily and you will most likely be glad you tried it.

Irish,
Are you sure about that ? I could swear that I saw a Wendy's (in the middle of town) in Liberia during my Superbowl weekend trip. I may be wrong, but I'll verify it in a few weeks.

You could be correct Mikey-B. I was repeating what was printed from the Tico Times a few months ago. They said plans were underway for Wendy's to open their first CR store in San Jose later this year.

Give us update when you go back to Liberia. Thanks.

I've seen them on their little mopeds, once I thought I finally met Hung Lo, but it was just a delivery guy. You gotta watch out for them, they're wreckless and suicidal. Kind of like the Manhattan messangers on bikes. You have to be careful of them, even though you're the one in a car.

Surfdog,
This has been going on for a while. I posted a pic (in regards to fast food restaurants that deliver) in the New VIP Gallery under Costa Rica Tourist & Scenery Info section. As of today, it's the 2nd pic from the top. It's a picture of a Burger King restaurant in Tamarindo. But if you look closely at the pic, you'll see that it's actually a moving van! Kind of like a 'roving' restaurant!

I haven't seen that one yet Mikey-B I was in Tamarindo last year. I am usally down by Playa Negra but i went to the "town" a few times. The Why Not bar was closed it kinda burnt me out

I have always enjoyed going to Tamarindo but the last time I was there I didn't like it much It getting too crowded and just too much construction going on. Hell I couldn't even see Playa Langosta from my car due to all the big resorts, houses ETC. I never really liked to surf Langosta much anyway but it is a good indicator on how good the waves are in Playa Negra.

Anyway ill stop rambling on and you wont ever catch me eating at a American fast food joint in CR none of them serve Yellow-fin Tuna

It's too bad that American chains have to be every f*ckin place on the planet where there's a buck to be made. I don't mind KFC--Wendy's and all that other garbage but when I'm in the U.S. When I'm in Costa Rica I like Costa Rica stuff..Costa Rican culture. I'm sure Starbucks..Walmart...Home Depot and Costco all probably have their sights set on here. Oh Well...all good things must come to an end I guess..
