I would also have to put Churrasco in this category; nice ambiance, good wine list and steaks that are tender enough to cut with a fork. Definitely a good place to take a date; be it pro or non-pro. :D

TB - where is this one located? I love a good steak.

Peace,

DR
And here is your answer:

Great place and an alternative to the CRT Standards of the Esquina but you will pay US prices for the beef. It is located on the way to the San Pedro Mall in a nice neighborhood by the Faroito or little light. the address is De la Iglesia ST Terecsita 400 metros al este y 100 al norte Barrio Escalante Tel 22250778. I had a Churrasco de lomito and salad with a 60 dollor Malbec and my budd had a filete in a cream mushrrom sauce and salad. Bill was about 200 buck.

The owner is a gringo who likes his cigars and fine whiskeys after dinner, I was told by someone else that they had the largest selections of whiskey in the country (I don't know if that is true as I don't drink whiskey). It is rather small if I remember right 2-4/6 people tables and 4 two people tables as well as the bar. They do have somewhat of a dress code as no tee shirts or shorts, other wise pretty casual, a full menu with an good assortment of appetizers, a good assortment of entries and several dessert choices. Sorry I don't remember just what we had, I will say he has a very good gourmet chief as everything we had was top quality! Like I said before they are a pricy place however if you don't mind paying high quality, well prepared food go check them out.

Hey Brother CVCap--is this the Wellington Pub you are mentioning? No word on the beef but looks like a great place with great folks. (This from a fishing Website):
http://www.californiafishingforums.com/ ... ?f=6&t=869

Or is it this one? From a cigar Website:
http://www.isthmuscigars.com/home_wellingtons_pub.html

ADD: I have been informed that they are one and the same place. Looks like a great party spot. Obviously (or is that obliviously?) my research didn't go deep enough.

This one. Wonder if anybody has tried the steak specifically or know if they use USDA beef?

Guys:

Ate at La Chandelier last night with my favorita, wingy and his date and another friend (5 in total) Spared no expense, ate and drank like lords - cocktails, two bottles of wine, after dinner drinks, etc... - I had the duck, somebody had the lamb, a couple had different cuts of beef - everything was excellent - including presentation and service. One big problem - the tab was $600.00 bucks!!!

Tonight - Mirador Ram Luna!!!

Peace, love, and happiness for all,

DR

After reading stuff like this, it seems like Costa Rica is becoming less "Costa Rican." :| This place got a $$$$ rating in Fodors. Glad to hear the meal was "excellent." :)

For business I used to wine and dine people at some of the nicest restaurants in the LA/Beverly Hills area, New York, Las Vegas, Washington DC and Boston.

They were well known places similar to and including Spago’s, Nic's, The Palm, Morton’s, and Sam and Harry's. Gratefully it was on the unlimited company credit card. Typically bill was $500, about $100 per person. I am not a heavy drinker but I do like good wine and that can add up.

The CR prices seem to be the same or more than the nicest places in the US. Was the quality of food and service the same or better?

So much for saving money in CR.

Since traditional Costa Rican cuisine is dismissed as bland by food people, there is a demand for upscale places serving "international cuisine" by fat cat gringos. :P

Me, I'm perfectly happy with having only rice and beans and chicken. :D

CVCap – Not really a baller; I just fell into a job where I got paid to "kiss ass" for and in behalf of the organization I represented. Along with credit cards granting essentially unlimited spending they issued a pair of knee pads. :P :P :P

The most difficult task was losing weight after leaving that job.

For me, there are few things better than a breakfast of pinto y huevos fritos with a casado for lunch at a soda, Muñoz y Nane, or Jumbo. I really like the sodas in supermarkets, not Menos por Mas. 8)

Diego - prices are high - same meal at Spagos, Palm, etc... would have passed $1,000 (because of the wine cocktails and number of courses). - and unfortunately no, not in the same neighborhood of quality of the restaurants you mentioned. All that said, it was good - I had a great time, and but for the price, I would go there more often.

Peace, love, and happiness for all,

Don Rico

Well guys - Wednesday came and my plans for Mirador Ram Luna went out the window. It was pouring rain and I just couldn't see driving in that storm. Long story short, bagged the idea of MRL and went to a restaurant called La Patagonia in Escazu.

Had appetizers of Chorizo, Escargot (in a creme sauce - never had it before), and some dish with porcini mushrooms. Everyone had the Entrana for their entree which was excellent. A bottle of Malbec with dinner - and for dessert we shared a flan dish that was heavier than normal (maybe it was called flan de queso - something like a cheesecake version of flan). Anyway it was all good and the tab for 4 was $250.00 - all courses through Don Rico's mandatory Sambuca!

Peace, Love, and Happiness for all.

Well I met the owner of a charter boat company out of Quepos and he was transporting Maine Lobster to his restaurant Marlininis between Quepos and Manuel Antonio. One could spring for a cab ride, have the cabbie wait while you dined and drive back. Or a rental car. Or fly to Quepos.

However, I don't know the quality there. It's still in business, and he told me that his market was the $50/plate crowd.
