Stopped by Chubbs yesterday to catch some college football games. Typical "college" bar feel to it. Greg was very accommodating in getting the games you want to watch in the screen in front of you. But I have to agree with the OP about the food. I ordered the Chubbs burger and it was the worse I have ever tasted. Could not stomach more than one bite. Need better food if they want to stay in they restaurant business. But as an American sports bar it's the best in SJ.

Stick to the beer and popcorn.

Good advice. I normally avoid burgers in the 3rd world generally. If you have ever been in a slaughter house you have a good idea of where the meat for burgers come from and why a lot of restaurants in the states are forced by the state health department to cook them at least medium well. The residual beef that are made into burgers normally harbor a lot more bacteria than say a good cut of steak.

Still and all, I am curious about the range of opinion about this place and will have to check it out next week, although I will probably stick to beer and popcorn.

Drank & dined @ Chubbs last week while watching part of hoops game. 2 fer 1 on all drinks from 5-7pm was a great deal. Had some decent Nachos as an app & then torcitos(sp?) of beef as an entree, very similar to pot roast for dinner. Was quite tasty. I will return when in sjo again, definitely between 5-7pm.

OK, I stopped in for a beer and have the following notes; the bartender has a nice set of hooters and speaks excellent English: I heard she worked at the Del Ray before. The food prices seem high; sort of like Gringo prices, so I think that is an issue. I ordered the Onion Rings and was not impressed as they seems undercooked and over priced. The bucket of beer prices seem OK. The place is well laid out and has a decent number of flat screens. I would patronize to watch the NFL when the season starts up. All and all, not a bad place. :D

I've always like going to Chubbs when I was down in SJ before. It's nice to go to a quiet place and just have a bite to eat and few beers while watching a game and relaxing before the evening marathon begins :) Their chicken fingers are great, IMO!

Does Chubbs still have a happy hour? Last time I was there I didn't know about a happy hour, but I did buy a bucket of beer.

Ok, I want to see a menu. Bar food is bar food down here and if that is what you want it is gonna cost more than a soda. A lot of restaurants get slammed on here for prices, but costs are very high. Most are running the same food and beverage costs that businesses run all over the world. Doesn't necesarily make something expensive just because you don't want to spend that much. I've definitely had to step away from the gringo world with the economy as it is for the last few years, however, when I want to splurge, I know I'm going to pay more for wings, burgers, ribs, etc. Gotta make it Chubbs, if for nothing else, to say hi to Jessica. Haven't seen her in years.

Chubbs was rocking Sat and Sunday this weekend. Sportsmens was cooking as well. Dunn Inn was dead as a hammer. Hlh had 6 people. I walked out when told beer was 1,500 higher than the 1350 at Del Rey. What a sad business plan. What I can not figure is when most businesses expand it is because they have out grown the spot they are in now. Seem logical ? Yes But with the Dunn Inn who had no customers Sunday they are expanding to cover what? Well as I said their were no customers in the place they already had. Where do these people get their business plans. I looked thru the windows and the place seems far from ready so lets expect a Superbowl 2012 opening. People need to study before they invest. I may be proved wrong but the Dunn Inn expansion is nice but will be just another flop and is very far from opening . I do wish them luck and will attend but glad I am not investing in the place other than a customer. Tell us what is the business plan to get these new customers ?

as they say "Build it & they will come"

since they are building a place that will offer among other things, food, liquor, working girls, casino gambling, sports betting, sports viewing & live music (have I missed anything BK?) I believe that they will come!

his business plan is to have whores and gambling in it ....true for the inexperienced visitor without knowing or belonging to crt they might not ever find the place ...but my bet is BK will be out promoting his place.....I thought all along that superbowl weekend would be the opening date .....now I hope its the date The place is a little different but has very good food and is laid back ...but add working girls and everything changes.

Herman, the existing bar/restaurant at Dunn Inn is there as a courtesy to the hotel guests, which is their primary business. The new addition is not intended to be an expansion of that, but rather a creation of a new venue with a totally different concept. Will it succeed? I don't have access to their financial statements, but I know a few of the people involved, and trust their business acumen. Once the girls, gambling, and booze start flowing I suspect the Dunn Inn will be the talk of the Gulch.
As far as the opening goes, once all the equipment is in place, which most of it is, the minor cleaning and cosmetic work moves along very quickly.
Stop by in late February and I will by you a beer. Just don't sit in the bar stool with the gold plate that says "Ocho Pelota." That's mine.

Yeah, I don't believe the Dunn Inn will have a problem. Took a tour last week and the sports bar part is going to be a great spot. Poker room also. And with a sportsbook, I don't think attracting a crowd will be a problem.
