"Shorts are for the beach"

That is a very common rule in many countries that I have visited. They are comfortable in warmer climates, but if you're not at the beach in CR, Russia, etc. -- shorts scream "I am a tourist" and sometimes "I am a target"

Mi compadres and I obeyed this edit when we went to La Esquina, the Sunday before last and aside from a bad case of 4 letter word escape, we acted quite like gentlemen, even stared disapprovingly at a Gringo with Del Rey Deb in tow (probably CvCap :D ), who dared to enter in shorts and a T-shirt and Yes, he was the only person in a full restaurant so attired. :D

Hey Tim, I was with you and Keith at La Esquina that Sunday. Lots of fun hanging out with you. Are you going to do a review on La Esquina?

Maximus: Here is the review:

Finally, together with two other CRTs; Maximus and one unnamed brother ( I shall christen BatBoy, due a past affiliation with one of the Ranger Bats), were able to sample the good food offerings at La Esquina Del Buenos Aries. The food definitely rates close to a 10 as far as tenderness and quality. I had the Lomito, basically a Filet Mignon and it was cooked to a perfect Medium Rare. The other guys both had the 14 oz. New York Strip, the name in Spanish escapes me, but the menu is bilingual so it shouldn’t be an issue. The plate is served with a small salad and small roast potato on the same plate, but the steak is the real focus here. BatBoy and I shared a nice Argentinean Mulbec for about $36 bucks and the bill came to about 51,000 colones including service, which was not w/o flaws; specifically due to an order of French Onion Soup that was completely forgotten by the waiter, who seemed a little distracted, but it was not a major problem and it was Sunday, so the A Team had the day off. All and all, a great value for the money and Highly Recommended as a break from your normal mongering activities.

Granted most of us come to CR for that, it's a small representation of the overall tourist in CR. Of all the people that have told me about their CR trip, none were for sex, most were ecotourist, followed by missionary work, fishing, beach related activities, zip lining, seeing the volcano, learning Spanish, medical tourism and looking for a place to retire.
But how many of these types of tourists are hanging around downtown in Hawaiian shirts and shorts? On the above quote anybody who comes to CR to hangout in Whorehouses is IMHO missing all the fun to be had here. With the economy the way it is pay for pu*sy is probably cheaper in a place like LV when total costs are factored in. Back in 95/96 the Ticos did seem alot more friendly of course CR wasn't known as a Sex tourist spot like now although it was available but a lot smaller scale and under the radar.

But, the point of this board is all about that, so your point may be falling on deaf ears. Its like going to MacDonalds and bitching because every ones eating hamburgers :) . There are hundreds of sites for CR Tree huggers, but this one is basically for Mongers. :)

The whole point of this thread is to dress appropriatly for yor surroundings and to respect the country and culture you are in. Also that gringo behavior reflects back on the rest of us. So if you think running around SJ dressed like a douchebag acting like you are mister MackDaddy because you picked up a hooker out of the DR, staggering around town sloppy drunk 24/7 makes you look like Mr Monger the Great thats fine by me I just don't roll like that. So you are saying there are two kinds of people who vacation in CR. Mongers and Treehuggers I don't get it. Because I have some critisizem for some of the morons in CR I have to turn in my secret squirrel docoder ring and join the treehuggers whatever that means. Please define treehugger 8)

Treehugger=One who hugs trees; There is your definition. :D Just messing with you dude :) . I have to admit that when I do come to SJ, normally I do drink a lot, have sex with some Debs, go out to eat with the boys, smoke a cigar or five and generally have a good time. However, I am pretty widely traveled in SJ, have even driven over from Panama by myself and have seen two of the volcanoes, even climbed down into the dead crater at Irazu, gone scuba diving etc. However, I have not gone zip lining and would like to do that someday. the issue that I have is that I want to do something on a relatively shot stay that I can not do in the states and banging girls in their early twenties is not something that normally falls into my lap these days. Now as far as dressing goes; when at the DR, SL, HLH I wear shorts and have even been known to wear a Hawaiian shirt ( they just call them shirts in Hawaii) However, while out to dinner at a nice restaurant I wear long pants, shoes and a polo shirt. 8)

Well, Brother TimBones, here's one such close to SJO with a bonus--doing the zipline gives you the right to try their Tarzan Swing: http://www.turubari.com/htmleng/?page_id=126 <<this is only one; there are several that advertise this adrenaline-charged "safe" adventure
Or use this resource: http://www.govisitcostarica.com/categor ... yTours.asp
Then again WTF--make your own: http://www.railrunnerzipline.com/?gclid ... 5godejaKzA
Finally there is one I believe in a big park in SJO but if you otherwise want to embrace your inner tree-hugger, try this: http://www.costaricaonlinemap.com/costa ... tails.html

Some fun now!

Thanks dude. If I ever get up the desire stop mongering long enough, I will give it a try, but to tell you the truth, I am of the mind that it seems like a lot of work to have fun. :D Oh and been to that park many times. :D

So now I have to unpack my luggage and buy dress pants and dress shirts? I think it's all about common sense. I wear shorts in the daytime because my legs itch when I sweat. I wear pants at night. I wear t-shirts in the day and better attire at night. I'm on vacaciones!!!!

I haven't read the whole thread, but I'm sure somebody has said to wear clothing "to try to blend in". For 99% of us, we will never blend in. We ain't fooling anyone, they make us for gringos from a mile away.

It's your vacation, wear whatever you are comfortable in, for the most part. But you must use common sense and a little good judgement. Obviously, if you're going to dine at a nice restaurant, you don't want to come in in shorts and flip flops. But if you are walking from SL to HDR for example, who cares. I don't buy the "if you look like a tourist, you will make yourself a target" way of thinking. We are targets no matter what we wear. Very few tourists can pass for a local. The key is to not give the criminal element opportunity to get you. Robbery is for the most part a crime of opportunity. If you walk around at night, you are giving them an opportunity. If you wear jewelry, you are almost inviting them to rob you.

Taking simple precautions, being aware of your surroundings, and using street smarts will keep you safe most of the time, not what you wear.

As far as respecting the people/culture... We can disrespect people a lot more by our attitudes, words, and actions than our clothing. I've seen Americans dressed nicely walking down Central but talking at about 3x the normal level, cursing every other word, and actually pointing at cute women's asses walking by. Who offends the locals more, the guy wearing shorts or the well dressed guys above?

You're right about we can never "blend in" unless you are a latino. But you can cut down your long distance profile. I wear nice button down shirts, jeans when i can take it, no hats, sunglasses and a backpack. From a distance I don't stick out and that's what I'm shooting for. Once you get close enough to see me better, of course you can see I'm a gringo. But at least the bad guys won't see me coming from 100 meters away if I was wearing a baseball cap, shorts, flip flops and and Ed Hardy shirt.

Blending in doesn't necesarily mean looking like a Costa Rican. To me it just means not screaming tourist with cash by what you wear. Low key, but nice gets the job done. :D

I just hope that the baseball cap, shorts, flip flop and and Ed Hardy shirt guys don't decide to organize a "Marcha de los Gringos Putos." :|
