Where is Wong's? I haven't had dim sum in ages.

The Chinese food in CR is terrible - Chop Suey, for christ sakes tops the menu at most places - I've been to TinJo and was not super impressed and felt the prices were high.

I swear I don't understand why CR in general has such poor food - I know they don't have a food culture (Like France or Italy, for example), but......

Then again, I've seen many CRTers praise places that - well, to be polite - just are not that good (IMO) - lets just say I love CR, its beauty, the people - especially the "ticas"* - but food is waaaay down on the list.

* Speaking of - in another thread, I think I detected someone using the term "tica" in a way too broad and encompasing way, so I'm off to check it out and perhaps school him

I mean in comparison to Chinese food in the states, the Chinese here does blow. But there are a couple places that if you know how to order you will find very good food. In the minute I have been here I just learned to follow the Chinese people that live here to find the best food. I will have to say that in the SJ area Wong's is prolly the best chinese I have had. Of course, if you want better food you have to order something different than what you would see on the buffet in a place in the states. I will agree other than that the food here in CR overall is sub-par in general.

I'll take your recommendation - you are talking Don Wongs, correct? Not Don Wangs, the place next to Tin Jo, right

Naw, talking about Wong's right by Mas x Menos in San Jose. About two blocks east of the end of the walking part of Avenida Central. I have tried a lot of different things there and they seem to have the best quality.

Uh oh, if that is the case, I guess I won't find any Chinese food I like here. I've been to Wong's a few times for take out, and it was like cheap strip-mall take out in the USA. But maybe I'm spoiled, in Houston we have over 100,000 Chinese immigrants and even more first generations born there. So we are spoiled with dozens of awesome Chinese restaurants.

I found the best shrimp/pork fried rice being served at the YUD FAD roast chicken place on the street down from the Wendy's on Central Avenida. It is very similar to what I get in the US. Interestingly, they don't have soy sauce [which is a must for me], so I stopped at the Automercado Supermarket just around the corner and purchased a bottle of it to take to YUD FAD to put on the fried rice. I was really surprised when the Chinese examined the bottle of Kikkoman soy sauce, as if it were something from another planet.

concur that wongs is the best chinese i have had in CR so far. and so close to the gulch. man its only a 3000 colone cab ride from the SL

I've heard that the East Garden restaurant, attached to the Hotel Castillo, has some nice Chinese dishes. I didn't get a chance to try it last trip, but It's on my list to try for the next time I am down.

I forgot there is an Asian Fusion place in the Cariari that is pretty decent. I have had sushi there, but they do Chinese food as well and it was pretty good. I have not been there in years because it is not really convenient to go to, but it was good.
