ElC...nice to hear from you. I've missed your eloquent posts.Just one question..... How come you can afford to dine at the Gran De Oro,and possibly stay there, when you are crying poor mouth and unable to return due to finances.

El C if you have not been there since 2005 you need to treat yourself to a return visit for lunch or dinner. It has been completely remodeled and it is spectacular. The garden patio is not quite as charming but it it is still very nice.

If you remember the prices in 2005 prepare yourself for sticker shock

Actually, I was there in September 2006 and stayed for four nights.

I had heard that their prices have risen dramatically, but I will still return for another meal. If the kitchen is still as good, it's probably worth the prices. And I should also add that the service was uncharacteristically good for Costa Rica, certainly up to U.S. fine dining standards and then some.

I don't remember recently crying poor, Bob. My finances, because of the nature of my work are always up and down.

More to the point, I was able to afford the visit to Grano d'Oro because a sugar mama was paying the tab. I was a whoremonger for the first half of my 2006 trip and a whore for the second half. Yes, the Grano is very expensive, true.

Incidentally, and not to hijack this thread... I will be returning to SJ August 28. I'm looking forward to seeing you, so to speak. :D

Looking forward to your next visit,my friend. Perhaps we can have dinner at our mutual favorite restaurant in spite of the high prices. You might want to set up a roll call and have some of our brothers join us.

they are chica hostile to bringing girls to the hotel but how hostile are they to bringing girls just for dinner? I love French food although it's usually pricy as hell. Will there be a lot of looks directed your way (assuming she's dressed like a normal girl) and more importantly is there any possibility of "extra sauce" being added to your meals?

I have never brought a chica there, however I've seen several without incident. sometimes you can take a chica out of the DR but you can't take the DR out of the chica. Some chicas just don't understand that you can't truly enjoy the great black bean soup eaten with a fork.

I ate there this past July. Extremely nice place, very tastefully decorated. Four or Five very attentive servers waited our table. The food was excellent, albeit very expensive. My only complaint is the small portions of food they serve, which is typical of a "fine dining" restaurant.

Nothing I hate worse than going out to eat and leaving the place hungry.........and end up stopping at McDonald's for a hamburger and fries to fill me up. :(

Please give me a range I could expect to pay for a dinner for two, e.g., $20-$30 / $30-$40 / $50 to $100. Do they have a nice wine cellar and what is the price range for a bottle?

Diego,

Depends on what you're ordering. My friend and I had pasta dishes. The price of the two meals total together, was about $50, plus tip on top of that......and yes, this is a place where both the upper class ticos and gringos are expected to tip, ALONG WITH the tip that is already added into the bill. Included in this $50 bill was two glasses of HOUSE wine that my friend had......at $8 per glass [and the wine glass was about half full]. I drank only a glass of tap water with ice.

As I had stated.....no question about it, the food was very good, but I could have eaten at least three times as much as they gave me. If you're a big eater, I don't recommend you go here.

I, of course, did not see a "wine cellar," per se.....but am certain that a wide selection of wines are available, at a hefty price [based on the price they charged my friend for two half full glasses of house wine].

Zebra....not to get into a disagreement BUT I have ordered a bottle of nice Chllean white wine for around 10,000 col. Find me a beautiful French restaurant in the States that you can get one for less than $20. I have found that you can have a dinner for two with appetiser, maincourse and desert with a bottle of wine for around $70-80 for two people.. I'm a pretty big eater but with all three courses I've never left hungry. (The bread is a great filler) Obviously it is more expensive than most other restaurants,so I don't eat there often.

but the service is a little "high brow" for me. Plus they turn thier noses up if you bring dates.
