I would second 'Bar y Resturante Olio' it is in my neighborhood and absolutely great food. Five minutes from the gultch I took VB there the other day and he loved it. Atmosphere is unbeatable if you are comfortable with Ticos.

DannyZee I followed your old link and it says 'not far from bar Raffa'. Where is this bar Raffa? I don't know it.

Raffa is a local hang out for university students and younger local crowds, about 4 ,5 blocks around Olio. Exact address I don't have off the top of my head, most students frquent those university bars in San Pedro would know the address.

Obviously, they gave us the gringo menu and I paid $30 for my Sea Bass ("Seabass Colonial") dinner. But it was probably the best seafood dish I've ever had ANYWHERE, so I am not complaining (too much  ).

That had to be some pretty damn good seabass. $30? ridiculous!
maybe they have iron chef costarican in the back..

see you soon bro.

I love this place, El Balcon de Europa, right in the gulch
near the New York Bar. You can get authentic French cooking
(as well as Italian), and you get the CRT discount. It's in the same
price class as Esquina de Buenos Aires, which is expensive for
Costa Rica. But it is so cheap compared to French restaurants
in the United States. It claims to
be the oldest restaurant in Costa Rica, and the atmosphere is
good. Friendly service.

I can't believe someone didn't already mention it. Sorry if I am
being redundant.

Cafe Mundo is a very nice location, but the food is not that good. I really like the decoration and the garden.

I'd love to confirm and update this list here to offer a quick place to look for food recs.
Can someone who knows whats up take a peek at the master list up top and let me know what changes or additions should be made?

I've been to Cafe Mundo several times, in my opinion overrrated and crowed with poor service.

And it was closed by the Health Dept for mass food poisoning in April 2011, salmonella. Here's an expat link with the story but also has the official government report (in spanish) .

http://www.usexpatcostarica.com/2011/04 ... osta-rica/

I guess that'll happen and it's up to the customer to decide to go back.

It was closed for a month and then the owner said all the food poisoning claims were bs, there was a flu bug going around.

http://www.ticotimes.net/Current-Editio ... ay-08-2011

That also pissed alot of people off, I remember alot of posts saying Phuck you after he was quoted on that in the above Tico Times article.

There is another problem, non-sanitation, known now to many which is why I only went once along time ago, but I don't want to start a side-thread on that because it would bother alot of tolerant members.
