Bigal211 and I went to Wongs yesterday for a light lunch after a strenuous "workout" at a "Gym" :) Many years ago I ate frequently at what was at that time considered one of the top 5 Chines restaurants in the US and though it has been a while, I still remember how fantastic the food was there. I have looked for years for a Chinese restaurant that came close. At least for what we had yesterday (egg rolls, shrimp balls and sweet and sour pork) I can honestly say that Wongs was the closest to the Restaurant in Albany, Oregon I have found!!! For a medium priced Chinese restaurant in Costa Rica, it was very busy with a large Tico crowd. In fact my only complaint (and it was not that bad) would be slow service due to shortage of servers for the size of the crowd. Loved what they did with the remodeling--simple but rather elegant. I had the pork and it was without a doubt the most tender pork I have had in Costa Rica. The flavor of the meat, the spices, and the sauces (very hot) was perfect and the vegetables were cooked just right (still crisp).
And our "light" lunch was anything but: very large serving size. I know that if I have not been really hungry after my very "strenuous workout" I could not have eaten it all.

I agree completely with bang bang, on Wong's. The food was very good. I had the shrimp balls and will have them again. I was surprised by how big they were, would like to see the shrimp they got them from. Bang bang didn't mention what we did next, we went shopping for a rolling pin. He is teaching me to make pizza dough, so I needed one… neither of us knew the spanish word, so in the 4th or 5th place we went he walked up to a clerk, balled his fists and started moving them back and forth in a rolling motion while saying "for pizza" in spanish… I'm pretty sure she thought he was asking for s*x in exchange for a pizza. Priceless.

At the risk of seeming obvious, if you want a food not native to the country you're travelling in, go to that food-country's embassy and ask one or several of the junior staffer's preferences when they are off-duty. This might be tough if you enjoy Baltic or Kazakh cuisine but otherwise worth a shot.

So Sailor Wong comes home after a 2-year voyage to find a new Ch*ld that looks distressingly Caucasian.
Sailor Wong: My dear, 2 Wongs don't make a White.
SW's Wife: I'm sorry, love, it was strictly Occidental.

Bro Greengo's references can be obscure sometimes; I think this is what he was obliquely talking about:
